Hummingbird

I noticed this poor little hummingbird in our garage yesterday and he is still there today.  I left the garage door open for him but he is confused and can't find the opening.  He is flying around the ceiling and although he takes some rest breaks, the little guy has got to be worn out.

It was not easy to take his picture....this fella is fast!

Has anybody got an ideas of how I can help him find his way out?

Hummingbirds respond to the color Red if you have a red flower or a red fake flower this will lead him out of the garage.  Best of luck!

I once used a broom to nudge one off the rails, he flew around back and forth but the interference we caused with the broom up high caused him to fly lower and he went out the door. We had 3 garage doors open and he went out the side door. It is just a matter of getting him to fly and find his way out with a little help.

Ann: I imagine if you left the garage door open for a period of time the bird will find its way out. Don’t know if there is a nest in your garage … probably not that time of year … but that would be a good reason for it not to leave. There may be a local organization that can come out and help you.I know if it were in my garage ... I would not leave until I managed to free it.  I just love nature and animals enough to give them that!

Ann - He needs to get out pretty quickly; he's dehydrated by now. I've had to capture a couple in the past--had them come inside homes I was building--and that's a difficult chore. I'm not certain which of us was more tired.

I think he must have found his way out!  I am glad he did it on his own.....I was afraid of hurting him, especially since he was already tired and dehydrated.

Oh Ann, how sad!  I'm glad to read your comment that it looks like he found his way out!  I heard they often get in garages because our automatic door closers have the bright red handle on them! Poor little guy, you do feel sorry for them when they don't find their way out!

We once had a hummer fly into our house while doing a remodel. It's so sad to see them struggle to find their way out, isn't it?

Ann,

The red item idea is likely to be the best thing to do so you do not hurt the little guy.  Put something red on the ground outside so he can "see" it and he will likely find his way out.

I am glad to hear that the hummingbird made it out safely.  Twice this week, I had to help lizards (hope it wasn't the same one) that had become trapped between my screen door and sliding glass door.  It boggles my mind that they can figure out how to get in those places but can't figure out how to get out.

Ann, Thought I had a pretty good answer but after reading all the comments..you no longer need it. Must have been exhausted. Have never seen one stop.  They are on my geraniums...red ones, of course..

How cool is that, I love those little guys and we don't have them here in Hawaii.  I guess you could put up a feeder to keep him healthy until he ventures outside.

Several of your commenters have it correct. Get rid of the red handle on the door opener in the garage and put something red outside on the ground. Hummingbirds love red. If you don't have red, do bright orange. Red apples and oranges work to entice them where they need to go.

Hummingbirds actually rest quite often. It's just that they are so small that they blend in well with their resting places outside. I probably have a few billion hummingbirds on my property, but I'll never get a good picture of them until I get something like a 1200 mm lens for my camera. They like to sit around in the trees and bushes, or on their nests. It's also quite fun to see several of them attack a red hawk, osprey, mockingbird, crow, or raven. You'd think the big bird would win, but not against a mass of hummingbirds.
