Now that Internet Explorer 8 is available, how many have upgraded their browser to the current version?

I use Firefox but I have to remind myself that the majority are still using Internet Explorer, and IE 7 at that. A challenge with marketing via the web is that we have no control over the browsers our viewers use. And for Viewers, some websites are designed for specific versions.

I posted recently about using Browser Shots to see what your web page looks like to others. Well, IE 8 is available and besides more closely resembling Firefox, it comes with a nifty feature called Compatibility View.

Viewers using IE 8 can go to:

  • Tools and the drop down menu will give you the option of Compatibility View.
  • In the address bar, an icon appears next to refresh. (icon looks like a broken page)
  • Click on the icon to use Compatibility View.

IE claims says by using Compatibility View, "Websites designed for older browser will often look better, and problems such as out-of-place menus, images, or text will be corrected."

Relatively speaking, the web is a new entity. One day do you think we'll laugh at the hub-bub of inconsistencies among browsers?

Kate,

I was recently using IE 8 and liked it. The views did seem better but it was a pain to constantly hit the Compatibility View button several page views in a row. I had to take it off due to a virus and will reupload it again this weekend.

It is hard to know what browser our viewers are using but I know the majority in my area use IE. (Most have not even heard of Firefox or Mozilla. It is a very rural area.) Thanks for the blog post. Have a great day!

Thomas, I think FF is what forces IE to get their act together. There is also a function in Developer Tools to see how a web page built for IE 8 looks in IE 7. Thanks for your comment. Kate

Kate, you are so right about the "infancy" of the whole business----we will indeed laugh at these "inconsistencies.

Kate, I don't like having to go to Firefox to get blogs to load faster.  I think the folks who blog should be careful about all the loading they do to their blogs because most people do use IE.  I hate those hanging backgrounds.

I won't use IE unless I absolutely have to use a site that was designed only for IE (and there are more of them than I can believe!). With a programming background, it just drives me crazy to see these computer nerds sticking new and wonderful code into their particular browser to make some teeny thing possible... I can't wait until they all shake out and become compatible :)

Barbara, since I have an inroad with the browsers I will push your wish for faster loading to the forefront. :) Seriously though, I know what you mean. Why don't you just switch to FF? I use IE only for checking browser differences. Kate

Shoshana, IE is a bad bad word in our family. I don't ever seee myself returning to it. Kate

Dear wannabe Godmother Mrs Kate,

Some people have suggested to me that Firefox is more reliable. However, I am reluctant to support that software because of the name. I do not like foxes. My real Godmother agrees with me.

Jane, ...and I don't want to. :) It is my opinion that FF displays websites with the most consistency among other advantages. But even though I don't use IE for browsing, I do recognize IE users outnumber FF.

Thanks for coming in to comment! Kate
