Friday Funnies: Officer, There's a Runway in My Street!Phoenix traffic stopping to let Light Rail train pass

The Phoenix Metro Light Rail is less than a year old, but we've already had our share of train/auto and train/pedestrian accidents. Most drivers involved in accidents or near-misses claim they're just not used to paying attention to the fact that a TRAIN may now be in their path.

That might hold up as an excuse for 3 more months, until the first anniversary of the Light Rail, but ...

... what would happen if Phoenix drivers had to pause, not for trains, but had to watch out for PLANES crossing their path?

These are real photos of the Gibraltar airport ... and the airstrip that runs directly across a major thoroughfare! Who was the brilliant engineer that thought up this one? Probably the same guy who came up with the idea of Daylight Saving Time!

Wow!  I'm not sure what to say.  I've never seen anything like that and wouldn't want to be in a car and look up and see a plane coming at me!!  Crazy!

OMG!  That is hilarious.  What happens during rush hour?  When I was in Victoria, Canada, I took a seaplane tour.  All the boats had to move out of the way when the horn blew for the seaplanes to take off and land.  I thought that was a hoot.  But airplanes having to cross the road?  Now, that's just weird!

Anna,

Holy cow that's crazy! I can't imagine an airplane staring back at me while driving in my car! Hopefully they don't have too many accidents there. Glad I don't have to drive that road every day!

Anna, That is crazy! I wonder what their accident stats are, due to on-coming traffic! There's always someone out there who is not paying attention!

I wonder what kind of warning lights and barriers they would have to put up for that, Anna.  How ridiculous!  I have seen countless people trying to outrun a train by going around barriers.  This doesn't have anything.

Now that is real crazy. An accident could really delay many more people there.

Carra- pretty amazing isn't it.  I didnt believe it at first myself.  Thought it might just be a hoax.  But it's not.

Wanda - I have no idea. That would be interesting. Think of the insurance they need!!!

Heather - I never thought of that.  People do try to outrun the trains.  I don't think they'd win in this case. Boom!

Charles - wouldn't it be interesting if they were accident free.  We'll have to find out!

Terry - it's either really smart (thinking outside the box) or stupid.  When there is no land for a runway there's more than one way to solve the problem.  I have flown into lots of small and very odd airports - some of the runways are scary!  You got one chance to land right - or bye bye!

That is crazy. Why would they even try to do that? I think the only time it would be acceptable is if the flights were only once a week, during a specific time... like 2 am or something. I dont see how they dont have more issues.

John - they don't have much space at Gibraltar - I wonder if that's what made them think outside the box.  Everybody's comments have peaked my interests to find out more!
