My business partner and I are avid music listeners.  In fact as I'm writing this I'm listening to the Rolling Stones "Exile on Main Street".  Some consider it the Stones best album, I argue in favor of "Sticky Fingers", but I do like Exile.

Anyway, my point here is that music, unlike any other art form is able to lift the spirits, motivate, and transport us back in time.  How many times have you heard a song and been taken back to a moment in your life?

I was raised on music.  My parents are children of the 60's so my earliest musical memories are of the Beatles, Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Led Zeppelin.  My earliest recollection of my first favorite song was "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple.  I was 4 years old at the time.  I always loved that opening guitar riff.  So simple, yet so perfect.   The first album I purchased was the Rolling Stones "Some Girls" when I was 10 years old in fifth grade, I loved "Shattered".  One of my favorite lines from that song is "go ahead bite the Big Apple, don't mind the maggots!"

In addition to being able to transport you back in time music is one of the only art forms that is transportable too.  I mean sure, you can carry around a painting, I guess.  Or you can watch T.V. or movies on your Iphone, but try watching your Iphone while running, working on your car, or painting a room.  It's not going to work out too well for you.

I don't think a day has gone by in my life that I HAVEN'T listened to music.

What say you about this topic?  How has music transformed your life?  I'd be interested to hear.

Jerry - I love all types of music, so does my 10 year old son.  However I can't work while listening to music because I'll get wrapped up in it.

Hi Jerry!
Interesting that you would bring up this subject.  I got tired of the "silence" in the office now and then, so I used the office American Express points to purchase a Bose radio. I was so pleased when it came in and immediately brought in my CD's and started playing them. Much to my amazement, 2 of our agents politely asked if the music could be turned off when they were in there, which we of course respected.  They said that work was work and music was music, and never the twain shall meet. Slightly distracting? Yes...when a great song came on, but then, what's wrong with that?

Jerry,

I love listening to music all the time.  I really enjoy the XM internet stations which provide a wide variety of commercial free formats.

As a side note, the 1st Stones album I had was in glorious mono.  Yup, I'm officially your parent's age.

I love music, but I can't listen while I'm working.  Music playing in the background will always "take me away" from what I am doing.  I find myself singing along or humming or drumming my fingers or tapping my feet.

Jerry, I love to listen to music when I am working.  Just put those headphones on and crank up the tunes!  From Beethoven to Black Eyed Peas.  i use music to motivate or soothe. A little Doobie Bros lifts your spirits around three when you are dragging.  :)

Jerry, I am one of the children of the sixties and would love to listen to music at work but, it seems to be too distracting for the other agents...I really love the music born out of those years as well as most other kinds with only a few exceptions.  Music is a very personal experience so, what's music to your ears may be something quite different to anothers's.  With all that said, sometimes I can't resist and I'll crank out an old tune here at the office.

On another note...I'm always finding a new piece of music by a group I never heard of...I was wondering about all the music out there that we would really like but may never hear just because we don't listen to a certain station or try out a new CD or an old or new LP...LP's seem to be making some sort of come back.

Hi Jerry:

Sorry I didn't have time to talk to you when you called. I keep very busy. Thanks for adding me as an Associate. I have to have the radio or Ipod on when I work otherwise it's hard to keep still in front of the computer. Julie Black

I do like to listen to music while working, especially while working on web projects.  Lately I find that I'm getting more finicky about the speakers I listen to it through.  A good set of speakers can completely change the experience.
