Is it a sign of changing times?

Is it a sign of a the baby boomer generation?

Is it a sign that we are permanently changing our thoughts about being more gentle to the earth?

Well, custom home sales are up in our building group, Wingfoot Building Group.  However, it used to be that our clients were looking for what was termed "McMansions".  Large homes with a big footprint in both heated and unheated square footage.  Along with these large footprints came large bills.  Large construction costs, large mortgages and large overall expenses.

Rencently, most of our clients come in wanting 2800 - 3200 square feet.  They are planning for the future and don't want to have large expenses, large upkeep and money to be able to travel.

But, with this said, even though the footprints are smaller there is still a desire for large closets, fine appointments and lots of outdoor living.

My buyers lately don't want to have to clean them so much. LOL

McMansions in my market were built very poorly, (DC/MD/VA). Not sure how your market has done, but there are a lot of "eye sores" in my market with McMansions.

A lot of local builders built poorly constructed homes and now they are empty! They were not built like the luxury, or even mid scale single family homes. Built with cheap materials and poor floor designs.

A lot of people are downsizing but it makes sense! Some of the bigger homes were built so quickly without TRUE professionals and now they are NOT desired.

Not sure what is going to happen with these properties. Homes should always be designed to MAKE SENSE. Why have a "sitting room"?  We are not in colonial days anymore! Family rooms with open kitchens make sense.

Homes should be functional, and cost effective. Builders need to think of the lady in the home and also the man of the house. Stop building homes that "suck up" utility bill and eliminate EMPTY space.

I would bet money that in the next few years yes the 'McMansions' are a thing of the past.  Smaller homes, and more efficent energy systems will rule.

It seems people want less to care for , they want efficient, and they want what is affordable.

Tracy,

Great Post. Thanks for sharing the trend towards less square footage.

Thanks,
