Be The Best You Can Be!  Develop A Set of Core Values

Seven Core ValuesHave there been times this year when you've felt like you are riding a roller coaster when it comes to amount of work, time and effort it takes to get to get a transaction to the closing table?

In every facet of the real estate industry we are facing many more challenges to overcome in a very tough economic environment.   Keeping any negative thoughts to a minimum and replacing them with positive ones plays a huge part in changing your mindset and can turn a tough day or week into a more constructive one.

Unfortunately in some instances, there are agents who are becoming unprofessional and lacking in their duties to their clients and their peers.

At the heart of who you are and what you do should be a set of core values that you emulate, follow and reinforce each and every day.

When my son joined the Army eight years ago one of the first things he was taught in basic training are the Seven Core Army Values.

Loyalty

Duty

Respect

Selfless Service

Honor

Integrity

Personal Courage

He learned what it means to live up to a higher standard by following these values everyday in everything he did on the job or off.

These values should be set in stone as standard for behavior not just in the Army but in our own daily lives and professions.

We accept a mission just as they do to do the job at hand and to perform our duties in the most professional manner and with the highest regard for our clients and our fellow agents.

Post these values prominently in an area where you can view them each day and let them guide you to be the best you can be!

I had called it a day after I wrote this last night and have been out all day today.  It was such an unexpected surprise to see that this post was featured.  I appreciate all the wonderful comments.

Hannah -  I believe these are values that everyone should live by no matter what profession they're in.

Sharon - Exactly and something we should all think about.

Mirela - It's about getting back to the basics again at home and at school.  This was a subject that I learned in school but it has somehow gone by the wayside in the education of our kids today.  It's so sad it doesn't seem to be a priority any more.

Heather
- They should be the standard for how we all lead our lives today.

Jeff - Put them all together and they spell LDRSHIP.

Debe - They are principles I learned early on in life and are at the foundation of how I try to conduct myself both professionally and personally.

Simon - These personal values were instilled in me both at home and in school and I have never lost sight of how important they are in all that we do.

Kevin & Monica - Good for you!  I'm going to type them out on a business card sized piece of paper to carry with me wherever I go.

Paul - I think there are many people who forget them too and don't realize they are key elements in developing good character and leadership qualities.

William
- When I learned that these were the core values of the Army, it wasn't hard to see how they were so much in tune with our duties as Realtors to our clients and to one another.

Marion - What a wonderful story and something we can all learn from.  I had my share of jobs that I wasn't crazy about either but always did the best I could knowing doing any less would be a direct reflection on me.

Gary -
And where each of those values are like the branches of a tree that grow stronger each and every day.

Liz
- Thank you. :)  There's going to be no stopping you once you've taken Katerina's course!  I credit her with everything I know about SEO!

Oh Man Donna...

I love love love that song. You just have to send me an email and tell who did it. For the life of me I can't think of the artist or even the name of the song. I do know that song reminds me of Top Gun. Which happens to be the very first movie BB and I ever saw together. Yes. I remember that. Go figure :)

And did you know you're one of the few who plays musical comments with me? That makes you unique and I just unique :)

TLW - I just sent you an email....you're on the right track with Top Gun.  Here's another one of my favorites from that movie that I'm sure you'll love as much as I do :)

Can you tell I love playing these musical comments? :)

These are great core values to have, and it makes sense to make certain what ours are especially in uncertain times.

Christine - I totally agree with you.  It does make them all the more important in light of the uncertainty that out's there.  We need to build on the strength of these values each and every day.

TLW -  You're welcome :)

Donna:  So glad you got feature for this post.  It is pathetic how many in our business have decided to turn on their peers.  Do they think this is the first step toward turning around their business?  It's not.  When others around you are excelling, I say turn off the negativity and hang around those that are positive.

Chris Ann - Thank you.  I find it appalling that something as simple as common courtesty to one another has been so lacking lately too.  I can't stand negativity and avoid people who spew it. I prefer to keep a positive outlook each day and being around those who do the same.

Donna those same values were drilled into me when I was in boot camp in the Navy.  These are values that if we follow them, will make us better at anything we do in life.

Donna, That is absolutely beautiful...I don't believe I've ever seen the list.  It should apply to ALL professionals and I believe those that don't act in the best interests of their clients will eventually fall by the wayside.  People know when you truly care about them.

Donna, I have seen the list but only because our son was in the Army.  Those are values you can't beat.  Our son just got out of the Army a few months ago.  He went in as a boy and came out a fine young man.  I wish we could somehow instill those values throughout our country.

I also read through the comments and am wondering why you and TLW would not share with the world the name of the song. Since you didn't I will. It's "Danger Zone," by Kenny Loggins, formerly of Loggins & Messina ("Your Mama Don't Dance"). Now all your readers know! LOL
