Lake Ontario, Bronte Beach surfer, Jenny Kotulak, photo

It was a chilly  56 degrees F. with a strong wind just before sunset this evening when I spotted this brave? soul taking to Lake Ontario with his surf board at Bronte Beach in Oakville.  Yes, Lake Ontario, where the current temperature was hovering around 67 degrees F.

Living on Lake Ontario for all these years, I must say I never really thought too much about all the related statistical information.  I did a bit of research and here are a few interesting facts and figures.

  • Lake Ontario is the 14th largest lake in the World
  • It ranks 4th among the 5 Great Lakes in maximum depth, but average depth is second only to Lake Superior
  • It is the smallest of the Great Lakes in surface area.
  • Lake Ontario is 193 miles long and 53 miles wide
  • The average depth is 283 feet and the maximum depth is 802 feet
  • The water surface area is 7,340 square miles
  • Shoreline length is 712 miles

Lake Ontario lies 325 feet below Lake Erie at the base of Niagara Falls.  Champlain first called it Lake St. Louis in 1632.  In 1660 Creuxius changed the name to Lacus Ontarius.  Lake Ontario in Iroquois means Beautiful Lake.

There were no boats to be seen on the lake this evening.  There were lots of fishermen.  And one lone surfer.  Summer is over.  But it didn't matter to this fellow as Lake Ontario was making waves.

He's making me very cold right now.  I never knew all those things about Lake Ontario.

Very interesting.

Those waves almost remind me of the ocean. :)
(Wouldn't it be nice? an ocean in Ontario? )

I was freezing.  I had a vest over my top but should have had a coat.  The sound of the waves really did sound like I was at the ocean.  The battery in my camera died so I missed some more nice shots.  Next time.

Oh I forgot something.  My husband goes to Mont Tremblant a lot as he drives for Coach Canada.  He's in Quebec now with a group from Switzerland.  He keeps wanting to go there but I hate to make him go on a driving trip when he drives for a living.  So we'll see.

That sounds great!  Still hot and sticky here, with dew points waaay too high -- we would love some cold air, thank you! :) I am very tired of air conditioning....

Jenny:  I was going to say... that looks pretty rough on Lake Ontario... but then again... I remember often in the fall and early winter months... that the waves on Lake Eric could even be much higher than those in your picture.  Growing up... I lived five houses from the shores of Lake Eric.  Some nights I could go to sleep with the window open... and hear the waves crashing on the beach.  Very cool !

Wow... maximum depth of 802 feet.  That is pretty amazing.  From another Great Lakes person... thanks for the story.

Indian Summer.  Great time for making waves.  There's sure been a lot of wave-making here on AR lately.

802 feet.  Guess that's why they are the Great Lakes.

Jenny - I already made my (more or less meaningless) comment on your pix/post.

Now I'm back just to comment again and in so doing go over 50,000 points -- right here on one of my very favorite blogs.

50,000.  4 months today.

Hi Jenny, it is always nice being near the water.  There is just something soothing.  It doesn't matter if it is calm or really rocking, it's nice.  We are just looking over the calm waters of Lake Simcoe with the Sun glistening across it.  The problem is the time seems to fly by at times like this.

Hi Jenny.  We are blessed to live close to the Great Lakes!

Fishing, fun, and sun all with no saltwater...

Jenny, if you enjoy driving, you can do the driving and he can keep you company; or better yet, you can take the train. (Of course you can FLY there very cheaply these days too, if you want to save a day or two in travel time.)

Jenny, I don't if it courage or something else, 56 degrees is really cold for me to even stick my toe into the water let alone go surfing!

Hello Jenny, at least this guy has a wet or dry suit on.  Check out Paul at his swim in Puget Sound -- now that is nuts!  Thanks for the history and geography tid bits.  John

Wow Jenny, what interesting facts about Lake Ontario.  I have only seen Lake Michigan, I believe it was really the ocean but they told me it was a lake LOL!! -- hopefully I will visit more Great Lakes someday.  I cannot believe the surfer, he is a brave soul indeed!!

Hi Shoshana,

Sorry I am late in responding to the comments here.  I went to Cuba (yes, needed the A/C there) and there was a nice breeze.  We won't need it here now until next summer.

Hi Rick,

Well he was enjoyig himself.  I was freezing just watching him.

Hi Karen Anne - That would be so great to hear the waves roll in every night.  I love the sound also.  I bet you heard some great thunderstorms also.

Hi Jim, It's taken me so long to get back here you are probably up to 100,000 by now.  I will pop by to see.

Al & Peg, Don't you love being up north in the winter when the snow flies and you don't have to go anywhere?

Hi Ken, Fishing, boating, it's all good.  If you can afford the gas for the boats these days.

Hi Candice - Just baby waves.  But no sharks to worry about.

Hi Sylvie - By now you know that we did fly.  I do love driving trips though.

Hi C Team - Even in the summer I wouldn't put my toes into Lake Ontario.  I'll just go to Cuba again lol.

Hi John - There is also a Polar Bear Dip here in Oakville on January 1 every year.  It's a fundraiser and it gets a lot of media attention.  Every year there are more and more crazy people joining in.  For a good cause mind you.

Hi Mary, I hope you do get to visit all the Great Lakes.  I have been able to see all but Lake Superior.  It's on my to do list.

Hi Steve, I'm not sure how many days of the year that the waves would be surfable.  I don't think it would be on a warm sunny day.

Hi Konnie - I must say that I learned a lot about Lake Ontario by reading the research.  I'd never thought much about it before.
