Pinal County, AZ, #1 in job growth for the nation???

I'm left simply scratching my head in wonderment.

The photo shows an area where the population density is probably no more than 2 persons per 100 square miles.

How many folks can populate a 2.5 acre biosphere?

The Civil war was officially over in, what?  About 1864 or so?

Ghost towns included.  Who takes that census?

Coke ovens?  That made me think of steel making which I generally equate with Pittsburgh, not Arizona.

WAIT!  There's more.

Approximately 50% of the county is comprised of:

  • State Trust Lands
  • National Forest
  • State & County Parks
  • Wilderness Area

That's not growth.  That's preservation.

I can't get over this.  I'll have to do some rethinking about what constitutes "growth" as determined by Money Mag.

Pinal County has a master plan for "open space and trails??  Hardly what we folks in urban areas would compare with condo and townhome developments.

By George!  I've got it!  Pinal County is dedicated to growing "preservation areas" and THAT, my friends is a very good thing.

You never heard of Pinal County, AZ?  Think again.  You likely know something about Pinal County without having learned the name. It's the county just north of Tucson, and it's home to:

  • Bioshpere 2, the 3.5 acre glass-enclosed science research center in Oracle, AZ
  • Picacho Peak, site of the westerly-most battle of the Civil War back in 1862.  The battle is re-enacted at Picacho Peak State Park every year in March.
  • Copper Creek, one of twenty ghost towns scattered around Pinal County that you can visit.
  • The Florence Coke Ovens.  Florence is the county seat.  The coke ovens have nothing to do with carbonated beverage or illegal drugs.

Pinal County has an Open Space & Trails Master Plan.  Check it out.  Approximately 50% of the county is comprised of:

  • State Trust Lands
  • National Forest
  • State & County Parks
  • Wilderness Area

"Prison operator Corrections Corporation of America is identified as the largest non-governmental employer in Pinal County by the Central Arizona Regional Economic Development Foundation. CCA has operated in Arizona for more than 15 years. The company operates six correctional facilities in Pinal County, including Eloy Detention Center, La Palma Correctional Center, Red Rock Correctional Center and Saguaro Correctional Center, all located in Eloy, as well as Central Arizona Detention Center and Florence Correctional Center, both located in Florence."

Well Lenn, I am not sure that job growth is the best measure of an area. I wonder if recruiters are inundated with out of work prison guards resumes. If Guantanamo closes, there is a place for all those out of work prison guards....

Lenn, when you go from 5 jobs to 15, you've tripled the jobs.

There needs to be some minimal criteria so that we're comparing apples to apples.

I doubt that there are too many people clammering to Pinal County AZ for a job.  I agree with Brian, the job growth might be there but not in as a grand scale as one might expect.

btw, today was biosphere and it was defined in the text. :-)

Well, look at it this way. Add a few jobs and on a percentage basis the growth could be substantial.

John.  Ah ha!  Perhaps the prisons are creating jobs in preparation for a few folks no one else wants to take.  Middle of the Badlands wouldn't be a bad location for that one.

Brian. Thank you very much for adjusting my mindset.  I feel much better now that it all makes sense.

Michael.  I'd love to live in a place of rare beauty near the location of that fabulous photo.

Mitchell.  Actually, they'd be closer to the computer hubs than NY City.  They just need a computer.  But, do any of them own automobiles?  Where would they get their little Gucci bags.  Wait, where would Lenn get her Gucci bag?

Jeff.  I believe that someone at Money Mag wants to locate there and wants Money to relocate them there.  I believe this would be very smart indeed.
