Perhaps I Should Disable The "!" On My Computer Keyboard!

Did you know that an exclamation mark is sometimes called a "bang" or a "shriek'?

And recently, I've notice that I use this little grammatical tool way too often, sometimes in my blog posts, but more often in comments that I leave on other people's posts.

The purpose of an exclamation mark is to add the bit of emphasis that you might add with your voice if you are really excited about something.  But sorry, my comments are usually just not that exciting.

Exclamation points do have their place in any kind of writing.  But that place is not at the end of almost every sentence that I write!  Maybe I shouldn't have used one at the end of this previous sentence.

And not using one certainly doesn't mean that your sentence will end with a "fizzle" or a "whimper".  They don't call "." periods any of those things.  Periods are just a normal way to end a sentence, and I'm going to try to start doing that more often - unless the sentence is a question.

Hi Pat ~ A "'bang' or a 'shriek'" - ha! too funny. Who knew?  I love exclamtion points and I think they line up pretty well with my speaking style - not that I'm a shrieker (usually) - I'm an enthuser.  And as you can see, quite fond of the hyphen as well.

Every so often I'll delete one or two but in general I like 'em and I'm keeping with 'em.

Patricia. I LOVE the "!" mark!!! In fcat I rarely use just one. I like to use 3 or 4 in a row. It's crazy!!!! But just can't seem to stop myself.

Patricia - My Type B son called me out for using too many exclamation points years ago.  I think Type A personalities tend to go a little overboard with the mark, but hey, maybe that sums up the difference between the As and Bs of the world. (I really had to stifle the desire to end with an exclamation point.)

I like using it to show some excitement or add emphasis to what I've said.  I'd better not use one right this minute.

When we over use somethings it does lose its emphasis.  But I do like the Exclamation point and I don't think it should be restricted!!!!!!!!!

Pat - I have to say, I like the exclamation point too. I guess it's like most everything in life, if not used to excess then it should be okay, right?! ;-)

Is that a shriek too?  Or is there another name for that???  Oops.  Did it again!

Hi, Pat!

I didn't know they were called that. Wow! That's interesting! You can probably get your whole year's quota of bangs and shrieks just from these comments.

Cheers!

Robin!
