27 Comments on Don't MISS Out On Life Because You Are A Realtor
Gary, the reason I subscribe to your blog is because you are like a good conscience: reminding, re-orienting, showing the way. I don't block out time on a regular basis in each week, to call my own. I do take time to visit family out-of-state, be there for the weddings and births, as well as the end of days. And, I now make time to call my grandkids--on THEIR cell phones, instead of passing msgs. through my son, their Dad. But you're also saying we need to block out time for OURSELVES. Consistently. Thanks.
Words of wisdom but easier said than done. I have had an excellent year so far but still find it hard to say no to buyers or sellers. It's not about a lost commission, it's more about what will they think of me if I say no. I really have to work on this.
It is all about balance, which is difficult to manage when, by the nature of the business, being a Realtor is not a 9-5 job. It is also about setting clients' expectations. They need to respect us, and any client worth his/her salt will.
It gets harder to juggle live and work when you work from home. Certainly some good advice for newer agents and LOs. Focus on what you need to do, so that you can rest easy when you step away from the office.
Gary: Crazy hours can be an understatement. Seems when most people are ending their work day, mine starts to really get busy and especially on weekends and holidays. At one point real estate was running me instead of me running real estate. Not only is an important to strike a nice balance between family, friends and work so there's a nice harmony to life but a Realtor really should take a little time just for him/herself to keep from burning out.
Gary, this is a very delicate thing to balance work and life. But it is a must.
Gary, I wish I had learned this in my 20's...when I was working SO hard and missed out on so much of life. I'm just glad I got it eventually....
Boy Gary this is harder than ever now. DO NOT miss out on life, just because of what you do for your work. LIFE is MUCH, MUCH more important. I do know life is much more important than work. I will find balance as soon as possible though. Great post. <SMILE>
Hi Gary, I have been struggling a bit with this -- it's hard to tell customers no, but even harder to tell a family member no -- I usually vote for the family, and make sure the customer gets what they need by referring them to another associate. Like I have so much money, I can just throw it away! LOL!
...and yet here I am reading and responding to blogs late on a Saturday night...
Gary: My first trainer told me unequivocally that their are those "prospects" out there that will take all your time and that's it's up to you the agent to draw the line. If you call yourself a 24/7 REALTOR folks are bound to take you at your word.
Hi Gary, After over 2 decades in the industry, I mistakingly used that term and regretted the moment it slipped from my tongue. A client took advantage of this while I was on vacation and I ended up sharing a good a deal of it with them. If I suggested that I spoke to them no less than 3 times a day, I have to take responsibility for it. Once you allow this, there is no real way to turn it off.
I don't mind working long hours, it just goes with the job, but I do keep an eye on what it truly important in this life. I don't want to miss out either.
Hi Gary,
I think keeping our calendar with us and making sure we get our family and friends events marked and book our work appointments around can help us keep our lives in balance! My granddaughter plays volleyball and our grandsons play football..I ask for their schedules @ the beginningof the season so I can make sure I get to them (not all but several). I block out a "date night" with my husband every week and usually stick to it. Life is too short to miss out on quality time with family and friends!
Gary This is rather sound advice, as Realtors we need to maintain balance. Never sacrifice the personal things because the time lost will not be regained.
Being firm is right - I want to get back into things more, and have to put the laptop (and AR) down sometimes to do what I'm suppose to.
Gary,
Great advice...and I am learning....I like Jennifer's comment that time lost will not be regained...
Gary - Balance is something I'm trying to improve. My first step, was an overdue vacation with my husband celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary with a week in the FL Keys :)
Good Point Gary,
These days it seems we tend to work harder, I am taking the rest of the day off. Thanks for the reminder.
Manage your time and plan your life --- You just have to see what is important to you! Great post!
