I keep a booth at the Southern Shows events in Raleigh.  That would be the Southern Ideal Home Shows, both Fall and Spring Edition.  I hover on the bubble, whether to continue to do them, or not.  But I enjoy meeting people in that milieu, and so I keep on.

It is "Old School" marketing, for sure.  Fun.  Meet and Greet.  Belly to Belly.  Speed Dating-style.  Two or three seconds or less for the elevator speech to people who are moving past.   I tell people "Hi.  I'm working my way through high school selling houses..."  And yesterday, I visited with folks who are leaders into the future, and are also maintaining an "Old School" presence.

These are folks who were there, and are active in organizing and promoting the upcoming REBarcampRDU on November 6th.

My booth adjoins Meridian Residential's space, and Eleanor and Steve Thorne are hanging out there this weekend.  Eleanor and Steve know it is a person-to-person business we are all in, but that is augmented by communication venues and technology that are fairly recent arrivals on the scene.  And Eleanor is a driving force in the organization of REBarcampRDU, as well as an ActiveRain Rainmaker.  We had a couple of nice visits yesterday.

Penny Hull with Stanton Homes came up to my booth.  I had been past Stanton Homes' booth several times, and hadn't caught her there.  It is between me and the coffee and BBQ, so I pass by a couple of times a day.  Stanton Homes is a sponsor of REBarcampRDU.  Penny is a prolific Localism poster and an AR Ambassador, and very supportive of REBarcampRDU.  And she laughs when I think I am being funny.

It was a great pleasure to have Pam come by.  Well, it was Bobby Carroll of Dakno Marketing, always a gentleman, squiring his lovely wife through the hall.  Pam was a patient and engaging sport as we discussed REBarcampRDU organization, and how much fun we expected to have gathering with local real estate industry folks and meeting some of the "names" who will be coming to the Raleigh-Cary area for the camp.  Bobby is also an AR Rainmaker.

Mike...

I haven't attended a trade show or convention in years, but you post has me thinking that I need to get back to basics!

Eleanor,

Super!

Richard,

I have come out ahead financially, but it isn't a slam dunk.

And I regularly wonder if I couldn't use my time better, more productively.

But...  I enjoy it.

Hi Mike - Visiting your booth is always a highlight of our bi-annual trek to the Southern Ideal Home Show. And you're right, my wife is a "jewel" for tagging along with me while I snap pics and Tweet it up when we attend. Hope you don't mind the link intrusion, but here is a quickie post I tossed up on Posterous: Mr. Southern Ideal Home Show!

Bobby,

No intrusion.  Actually, great reminder for me to hook up with Posterous. It was great to chat with you.  See you at REBarcampRDU, if not before.

Mike - it was great seeing you there!  Fortunately, when you think you're being funny you actually ARE funny.  No one knows better than you how to add a little levity!
