Belmont Lake State Park Suffolk County  --  Long Island New York

Birds of a Feather?

There have been a growing number of crimes on Long Island New York that are being billed as "discrimination" by some while others believe it's the number of gangs that have grown in certain areas of Long Island New York.  Others just believe it's the growing population on Long Island NY.

The old saying "Birds of a Feather Stick Together" came to mind when I saw this picture.  Two birds, clearly NOT the same still enjoying a lovely day together.  Belmont Lake State Park in Suffolk County Long Island NY may be a wonderful way to spend a day...and learn a lesson or two.  A lesson we can teach our children-by the ways of ducks.

Carole

What a beautiful picture of the Drake and Hen. Belmont Lake State Park is beautiful. We should all have the birds of a feather attitude; life would be so much more pleasant.

Carole, I know you love ducks, and I was watching some the other day - like yours - some with green necks, some with yellow, some with dots, some with stripes ... and they were all getting along so well.  It makes you wonder, sometimes ...

It would definitely be a better place ... maybe the animals can teach us something.

Nice to see that nature can teach us things we may have forgotten along the way.

Debbie, I loved the park and right now they're expanding it.  You're better at the Ducks names then I am but they were so happy and I watched them for a while.  Funny, I'd forgotten how big that park is!

Hannah, We can only hope.  It's a nice thought.

Sylvie, I think they can too.  I see so many different animals that just get along--it would be SO nice if we did.

Joan, I am wondering if parents saw a lesson in this.  I have seen lately children growing up with hate and I can hardly believe my eyes.  There are so many wonderful things we can teach them.

Carole,
Nature teaches us many things--we just have to take the time to look and listen.

If only everyone thought this way... Even if we can't get agree or get along, just agree to disagree or simply accept people for who they are. Simple concept, just wish it was that easy.

What an awesome post!!  It is sad that there are so many who look at others as different . . we all have hearts and they all beat basically the same!

Carole - great shot of the duck pair, one from mars, the other from venus. We need to stop emphasizing differences and start emphasizing what we have in common.

How sad that your great city is experiencing such crimes!  I like Mike's comment since the brown duck is a female and the colorful one is a male.  Beautiful photo and great reminder about life and how we should treat all living creatures...the Golden Rule.

Such a great lesson to be learned from this picture Carole.

It saddens me to hear about some of the things happening in my old stomping grounds of Long Island.

Belmont Lake State Park is a great place to go and escape from it all for a little while.

Carole - Believe it or not, both of those ducks are the same.  One is just the male (brightly colored), and the hen.  They are Mallards.  But yes, it would be wonderful if we could all just get along.  Much of that depends on how capable folks are of accepting others, without trying so hard to control them.

Carole, perfect picture. You are absolutely correct....wasn't it Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney that sang a song about the keys on a piano.....black and white???

What cute little ducks!  You know really, it's quite remarkable how well we DO all get along, especially in the larger population centers.  That's too bad about the increase in crime though... growing pains?

Yep, same species (mallards) but definitely not the same since the beautiful one is a male and the dull, drab brown one is a female. It's it interesting that humans seem to be the only species where the tries to be the most beautiful?

In response to Al & Peggy's comment #14, my marketing guru, who is also Beatles encyclopedia extraordinaire, tells me that the song they are thinking about is "Ebony & Ivory" by Paul McCartney and Steve Wonder. The Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson hit song was "Say Say Say."

Carole:  It seems to me that most people really do want to get along and there's always that element that upsets the balance.  As I remember in my school days, most students were actually pretty good and only a handful were trouble makers but it was those trouble makers who gave everyone a bad name.  Just like a bad real estate agent gives the rest of us a bad name.  But, I completely agree with you, what a wonderful world if we could all just get along.

Carole, Great post! It would be wonderful if we could all just get along. This is an unusual picture. It seems we don't usually see 2 different types of ducks swimming together.  Great reminder...to get along no matter how different we are.

I would love to see gang crimes get longer time in jail. These kids need to realize that this is just destructive behavior and that these people are not your friends, they don't care about you. This violence needs to stop and long prison time for these gang members would certainly discourage some from even joining in the first place.
