Our local newspaper seems to have turned into a newspaper about all things pets. Recently we got news of Pet Airways, and now comes news from Ithaca, New York, of a pilot project by the Tompkins County Dog Owners Group and Cayuga Compost.

Their intent is to create a company to compost the tons of dog poop left behind by the city's 50,000 dogs each year. Apparently it will take 2-3 years to compost the dog poop and make it available to the general public for deep filling purposes. Dog poop contains parasites and pathogens that make it unsuitable as compost for topsoil or gardens, but finding a good use for the estimated 20 billion pounds of dog poop produced annually could result in a significant reduction of waste sent to our landfills.
