My owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in Mission ValleyOur local newspaper seems to have turned into a newspaper about all things pets. Recently we got news of Pet Airways, and now comes news from Ithaca, New York, of a pilot project by the Tompkins County Dog Owners Group and Cayuga Compost.

Their intent is to create a company to compost the tons of dog poop left behind by the city's 50,000 dogs each year. Apparently it will take 2-3 years to compost the dog poop and make it available to the general public for deep filling purposes. Dog poop contains parasites and pathogens that make it unsuitable as compost for topsoil or gardens, but finding a good use for the estimated 20 billion pounds of dog poop produced annually could result in a significant reduction of waste sent to our landfills.

Jim,

Sorry.  The minute I posted my comment above, I saw the changed blog post. Now it makes sense. I do not know how it happened, maybe you were still editing the final version.

Hey, Jon - Sorry about that. I forgot to use draft mode. I just got home from a great open house. A little tired, and the open house was better than I thought it would be since the Chargers are playing. However, apparently they didn't sell enough tickets by the deadline for the game to be shown on television, so everyone's been out and about today. It's sometimes hard to plan around these sports games when one doesn't know whether or not they are going to be on television.

On Friday I showed 2 homes with (removed for showings) dogs.  Both back yards were filled with dog poop.  You'd think the sellers would want to make a good impression, not to mention the possibility of unsuspecting buyers tracking the stuff through the house.  If the good people of Tompkins County run out of their own pet waste, maybe you could send them down here to Texas?

Jon, interesting idea.  I feel sorry for my trashman every week when he has to open the can and deal with my pets poo, even tho I double bag it and tie it up tight.  The question is how would that all be collected and stored? Ugh!
