Who is your builder again...?

All builders are not created equal.  Different levels of attention to detail,d ifferent philosophies, etc.  At some level they are the same.  But at many levels they aren't!  Reading the East Valley Tribune today, I came across this article.  It suggests that buyers of new homes

  • Focus on the builder, less so the price.
  • Get an inspection done - so what if its new!
  • If you do have problems, file a complaint!!

I also came across this article.  A experienced developer had a new home (~ 500K) built by a well known national builder.  Boom.  200 defects/workmanship issues during the last 2 years?  Ouch.  Varying levels of responsiveness and customer service?  Poor materials and inadequately trained labor during the recent boom?  In adequate regulation?  This story has it all.

I always say, reputation means something.  If your builder has it, it may be worth its weight in gold.  I have blogged about this topic before and once again attach a link to a 2006 report on Phoenix area builders.  Please take this information and apply it before purchasing your next new home!

Thanks for Reading :)

I just posted yesterday on that same issue:  What exactly is quality?  I proposed that the sticks and bricks don't matter as much as the process of customer communication.   I'm frustrated for all of us to hear that someone is upset about their new home building experience.

Kaushik, you are right all builders are not created equally, but unfortunately the bad ones just seem to keep on popping up under different names.

I agree.  Just because a home is brand new doesn't mean it won't have problems.
