ATTIC                                                               Fall Checklist by Carl Winters

Look around your attic during daylight hours. Close the attic door and in the dark look for openings that allow light to show through.

Look around for signs of animal activity or entry zones that would allow some unwanted critters.

Feel around the insulation for damp spots for leaks. Look for missing or torn or no insulation areas. This could mean some animal activity.

Look for gaps around vents and fan motors and skylights.

Check for frayed wiring or loose screws

Make sure your ladder to your attic is secure

Look around to make sure rafters and joists are secure

Always wear long pants, long sleeves   and a mask when you enter the attic.

Robert: Be sure to wear long sleeves and long pants next time. That insulation can sure make you itch.

Dale - it is a good checklist going for First Time Home Buyers whether they are in New Hampshire or Texas or anywhere in the U.S. they need to know about regular maintenance checks to maintain their home.

Sheila - You mean you don't want to meet up with a big critter in the attic? I don't much like going in myself but it is my job as a home inspector.

We don't have too many ladders to the attic out here, which I've always thought was interesting. I guess the cost of a home is already too expensive. Adding a $500 ladder to the attic would add $50,000 to the cost of the home -- LOL.
