This is really fun and easy!  I realize that I tend to jump on the bandwagon about a year or two later than the majority of people...but today I discovered YouTube!

I mean, I didn't really discover it.  I've been watching YouTube from the get-go.  I just never thought about posting my own video until today.  What would I post anyway?

My Animal Rescue League Dogs

I adopted Autumn almost exactly fourteen years ago from the Michigan Animal Rescue League.  She was six months old at the time, so she is now over 102 in "people years."  She has never gone grey; her teeth are perfectly intact; she is the perfect weight and she will defend me to the death.  Awesome guard dog.

But she was my late wife's dog and she makes sure I know that.  Ever since Karen "disappeared," Autumn resents me terribly.  She is a moody dog and she wants to know where Karen is.  So she's been misbehaving a bit.

I adopted Farley about 6 years ago from the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

He was so grateful to be taken home from his tiny cell at the rescue, he has never stopped thanking me.  When Karen picked him out, I was a little dismayed, because he had been a stray and had no training whatsoever.

Now, he is completely housebroken.  And when I say completely, I mean I've accidentally left these dogs for fourteen or fifteen hours once and neither one would go. He housebroke in two days with praise only.

I trained him to do all of the standard things: sit, stay, lay down, crawl low to the ground (I don't know- in case there's a fire), wave hello, speak, high five, and balance a treat on his nose.

But one thing that I did not teach him to do was to walk Autumn.  For some reason, he started doing this on his own.  When he wants to go for a walk, he goes and finds a leash and brings it to me.  Then, when I hook it to Autumn, he insists on taking the other end and walking her.  I have no idea why.

When considering a new pet, please consider a shelter dog first. There are many reasons why, more than I can list here.

There are so sweet, I'm always sad when I hear bad things about anamials being hurt. I's so nice when so many people get an animal from the SPCA

Neat! Interesting that Autumn lets him do that. Thanks for bring up the importance of investigating shelter dogs when considering a pet. Animal rescue organizations are also a great place to look as well. These are usually breed specific and located all over the country. Thanks for sharing the you tube experience!

Michael, thank you for asking about Paws4Ever! We are planning some exciting things that will hopefully make a big difference for shelter animals all over NC so I am as excited about this work as about my real estate work.

Getting folks to consider shelter animals whenever possible is a goal I hope is shared by many ActiveRainers!

Michael,

I got my first dog ever at Christmas.  I was walking out of Safeway with groceries for the feast and there he was with a blue ribbon around his neck.  Having Jack as part of the family has been so much fun.  Your dogs are beautiful.  Thanks for sharing.

Michael, that is just too cute.  Dogs come into our lives for a reason, they pick us, we do not pick them.  Farley was sent to you to help you care for Autumn!  When she is gone, there will be one waiting for you to find him/her, to fill the gap left by Autumn and to help Farley.
