HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Notebook is a piece of junk - don't buy one

HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Notebook

For anybody thinking about purchasing a notebook computer, I would strongly recommend staying away from HP. About 6 months ago I bought a HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Notebook and about a month ago the screen started flickering really bad. I called their tech support and they sent out a box for me to ship it to them to fix. I was without the laptop for about 1 1/2 weeks. When I got it back it stopped flickering. However 1 month later it started flickering again.

So at this point I am wanting a new laptop. They obviously sold me a defective one. So I called their customer support and talked to Nikki. I told Nikki I was having the same problem and wanted a new laptop. Unfortunately Nikki could not accommodate my needs. She said that they require 3 consecutive tries at fixing a single issue before they would consider replacing it. So that would mean I would have to be without my computer for almost 2 months before they would consider replacing it. I don't know about you, but I think that is unacceptable. I requested talking with a supervisor, but they were about to have a meeting and would not take the time to talk with me.

So if you are going to buy a notebook computer any time soon, I would strongly recommend staying away from HP (hewlett packard), and especially the HP Pavilion dv5-1235dx Notebook. It is a piece of junk. Also my touch-pad button is having issues where it double clicks when I single click it, and my mouse cursor jumps around all the time. Junk, Junk, Junk.

If you know anybody thinking about buying a notebook, please pass this on to them so they don't make the same mistake I made.

That is horrible. Thanks for the heads up. I was planning on buying one next month. I am definately NOT buying HP now. Maybe Acer or IBM.

Thanks Chris. Customer service is very important. It's frustrating when companies dont realize they're losing business because of how they respond to customer complaints. Good Luck.

Yes, I agree, that is unacceptable.  Thank you for informing us about the HP notebook:) It won't be on my list to purchase!

I'm having the same problem with my HP laptop screen, but I'm going through Best Buy with my warranty. They couldn't see the problem (which I find impossible to believe as it happened to me multiple times a day...) but if there was a problem then it was cosmetic and not covered under my warranty. Did you ever find out what your problem was so that I may be able to steer the BestBuy jerks in the right direction?

I quite agree about the laptop (HP Pavilion, mine's dv7) being junk.  My pad informs me from time to time that it's out of order, for no apparent reason.  With that, I have no alternative but to reboot, no matter where I am in my work (my Excel programs get clobbered, as does any text I'm working on).  Also, the pad is not delineated for left and right button areas, so moving your finger while clicking can get you quite a surprise (such as clicking on "minimize" and effecting a "close").  Also (and this may be software) the text rendering at times is extremely faded as though they were saving on non-white pixels.  HP also co-opted the function keys for their own set of controls, so you have to depress the "fn" key to enable the old set of functions (such as exiting using f5).  My AC/DC converter died and they replaced it in a couple of days (which seems like an eternity when you're life's on hold waiting).  Same for the battery, broke, then replaced, but again, a couple of days.  I don't blame them for their response, though, rather that two items broke in the first place in less than a month.

I have had nothing but issues with the same laptop.  I purchased mine in March of 2008 and it has had very little use.  My screen just went out so I think it's the inverter or backlight.  my mother board has been replaced also.  hp customer service is the worst.  demand to talk to a rep in USA as you are routed straight to india.
