CT residents will have some extra dialingas well as reconfiguring to do starting Nobember 14, 2009. All phone customers with a 203 or 860 area code will have to dial the area code for ALL calls, even local calls within the same area code. So, if you want to call your local pizza restaurant down the street, you must dial the area code plus the number.
If you forget to dial the area code on November 14 or after, your call will not be completed and your telephone company friendly recording will instruct you to hang up and dial the number again, including the area code.
Exceptions to this new procedure are the following:
You will still dial three digits only to reach 911
If 211,311,411,511,611,711 and 811 are now available in your community, they will remain three digits.
The new 475 area code, serving the greater southwestern CT area, will serve the same geographic area served by the original statewide 203 area code. The new 959 code, when implemented, will serve the same area presently served by the 860 code.
Please note: In addition to changing the way you dial and having to possibly reconfigure your contacts on your cell phone, you may also have to update any text or email alert services you may presently subscribe to. Additionally, remember to check your stationery, business cards, personal and business checks, marketing collateral, and advertising material to be sure the area code is included.
