Energize your business:  Take a weekend away from it and laugh!

Some of you may remember my post last year about getting together with some of my old high school girlfriends.  We have made it an annual event, and last weekend was our girls getaway for 9 of us.

This idea started at one of our big fancy high school reunions.  There were so many people there that we didn't even get to see some of the folks we had wondered about.  It was very nice and lots of fun, but expensive and crowded.  The group with whom I was closest with in school got together and decided that we should try to get together in smaller groups, less formally and more often than every 10 years!  It would be less expensive and just as much fun for us.Sacramento Airport

About 2 dozen of us (guys and gals) got together in Los Angeles a few times and we all chipped in to fund a scholarship for a worthy student graduating that year from our high school.  We have repeated that as an annual event, but my closest girlfriends and I wanted to also do some fun get-togethers for girls only, since we tend to giggle like teenagers when we all get together.  And we have kept that tradition as well.

So twice a year at least, I run away from home and play with my old buddies and try to put business aside.  I warn my clients so they won't expect me to be here, although I let them know they should call me if there is an emergency.  My cell is always with me.

Lunch at High Hand NurseryThree of us gals live in Northern California, within an hour of each other, another spends half the year at LakeTahoe, which is about 1 1/2 hours away from us, and the rest are in and around Los Angeles.  So some of our trips are to Southern California, but for those that are up in this area, one of the other gals and I pick up the others at the airport and we are the designated drivers to get to our ultimate destination. This year one of the girls met us along the way so we had three cars for the nine of us.

Last fall we went to Lake Tahoe.  This year we went to Grass Valley and Nevada City, California.  We had people coming in on three different flights, so we settled in at the Starbucks and waited for our whole gang to get together.  While we waited, we made the acquaintance of a very nice member of the Air Force who was returning home from Baghdad.  He was between flights, and was loaded down with duffels and satchels and one hard case that contained his weapons.  Believe me, he never turned his back on that one!  I didn't get his High Hand Nursery, Loomis CApicture, but he took one of us.  His last name was Vincent and he was on his way to his home base in Colorado.  I hope he gets to stay home now.

As for us, as you can see from the photos here, we ate, enjoyed some wine and cheese, we shopped and toured places most of us hadn't been before with our guide Jana, who lives in the area.  Jana was a wonderful host to all of us, and this weekend was full of good food, good company, good laughs, interesting sights and fun shopping, and I returned energized and feeling eager to get back to business.

I wonder where we'll go next!

Looks like a great time reconnecting with long-time friends with a little travel thrown in. Laughing with friends is such a boost to your well-being. You are right, it energizes!

Sounds like fun Susan.  I encourage my Agents to take mini-vacations every 6-8 weeks.  They get re-energized and their business gets rejuvenated.  It's a good thing!

It is great that you stayed close all those years (well not that many).  In the U.K. where I'm from there were not year books, class reunions, etc.  That is such a shame.

That is just perfect!  It's so sad when people only get together for weddings and funerals.  Reunions of old friends is priceless!

I dont think there is any greater medicine for your own mental health than to get away from work...and I mean completely away from work...and enjoy just being where you are. Whether that is down the street or around the world, the ability to give your brain a break is monsterous. And, it does wonders for your own health!!

Excellent advice.

My wife and I just got a way to Savannah for the weekend. Our eight month old daughter Jenna stayed overnight at her grandparents for the first time. It was difficult leaving Jenna, but we had a great time. We both came back refreshed.

I love this. And agree. You have to step away for a minute. To remind ourselves we are human. Not robots. I love the photos in this post. It LOOKS like you are recharging your batteries. Thanks for sharing.

I think this is an excellent idea. Everyone needs battery recharges which can be done in different ways.

Susan,

Taking a break always clears they head and sole. And there is nothing better than getting together with people who have known you since kindergarten. I joined facebook about 6 months ago and found several of my old high school friends. This year was our 30th, but no one planned a reunion. How sad.

The funny thing is, we all seem to have not changed that much.

Hi Susan~ I think it is wonderful that you get to do this.  The closest I can come to that is finding some old friends on Facebook.  Guess that is why I love Facebook so much!

That's great, it looks like you've got a great group of friends. I really didn't stay in touch with my high school classmates. We've reconnected thanks to Facebook.

What a great idea!  I have four sisters and we've (sad to say) wasted a lot of years without getting together, just us girls.  We have family reunions where all the spouses, cousins, etc are all there, but it's not the same as a bunch of girls.  This year we met and spent a week-end together and it was a blast.   We've vowed to make it an annual event.  Your blog refreshed my commitment.  Work cannot and should not be our lives.  Family and friends and laughter should definitely be more important than making another deal.  Good Job!

Hi Susan. I love this post. Once in awhile I get together with some girlfriends on the weekend and we rest and relax.  Being near people who can make you laugh is a great feeling. ~ Lana

Excellent suggestion when it comes to taking a break. I am taking time out during Thanksgiving. We all need time away from our businesses to recharge the batteries.

Hi Susan, What an absolutely wonderful idea! I think it's so important to reconnect with those friends that were so important to us in high school. After all, those were some of the best times we had in our lives. My husband's friends are doing the same, since his 30 year class reunion last year. 10 to 14 of them meet every 2 months at someones house for dinner and great conversation. He loves it!

Susan:  There is nothing like packing a bag, boarding a plane (or heading out in a car) and crossing State lines to make that business pop either.  I was covering for a co-worker this past week.  Her business was "slow."  As soon as she left, the phone rang off the hook.
