One of the main reasons why I joined the ActiveRain community and endeavor (endeavour for my Canadian Friends) to blog persistently and consistently is so that I can help other people, possibly beyond just being a home inspector in my own local area.
Previously to my tenure here, I had spent five years at the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors trying to help people with their marketing. With some I was successful, but others took great delight in being mean and contentious simply for the sake of being mean and contentious. After five years (many of my friends call me the "Five Year Man"), I looked for something else and found ActiveRain. All indications are that this relationship will last longer than five years -- LOL.
That, however, is not the purpose of this post. Rather, recently, I received a call from a female in Philadelphia. I don't know her age, only that she was a student doing a school paper on safety in the home. She had found an ActiveRain blog post of mine from August 3, 2008, about safety in the laundry room, which you can read here. She wanted to know if she could use some of the pictures in her report, and if so, she would credit me and my ActiveRain blog. How cool is that?
When I went back to read the blog, memories came flooding back to me. That was my fourth blog post after returning to ActiveRain in late July 2008 from a 17-month sabbatical. Coincidentally, I remember having my afternoon inspection postponed that day, so I sat down to do a blog post. It took me a little over four hours to write that post about laundry room safety.
Was it worth it? Yes. My post only got five comments -- which devastated me at the time with all the workd I had put into it -- and two of those were from friends. However, when I do something significant, I usually jump in with both feet and know that I'm in it for the long term, defined as "at least five years," so to have a post that is 14 months old provide some useful information for a student's research paper all the way across the country makes my long-term goals seem reasonable.
Ah, yes. The memories....
