From Summer to Fall and Winter - The Different Colors of Red Lodge

The following photo was taken the morning of October 1st on Ski Run Road in Red Lodge, Montana.

The different colors of Fall in Red Lodge

Red Lodge experienced its first snow fall on September 30.  Prior to September 30, we had 18 days of sunny and warm temperatures (with temperatures above the seasonal averages).   It rained for only one hour during the previous 18 days before we received the first snow fall of the season.  Things can change quickly from one day to another when it comes to weather when you live at an elevation of 5,555 feet!

Happy Fall!

Wow, we'll be getting snow soon...by the end of this month possibly, but I'm hoping for later!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Kathleen

No way Gerry, not the four letter 's' word!  BTW, driving through mountainous Virginia, thought of you and your gorgeous views!

Long time no see, Gerry.  What do you call a "snow fall" in Montana?  One of my Toronto friends lived in Tennessee for a couple of years and he told me that when it snowed to a depth of say, 1/2 inch or an inch, the whole city would come to a complete standstill for the day.  The city couldn't even plough themselves out since they had no ploughs.

Hi Gerry - Nice contrast between the foliage colors and the bright blue sky. Won't be long and it will all be under a blanket of white.

Hello Gerry, this is indeed a great time of the year for photographing local scenes such as yours.  Very Nice!  John

PS - our highest peaks in the nearby Cascades got their first dusting (8,000' and above) on Labor Day weekend this year!

Al and Peggy,

You still have a few more weeks before the four letter word gets mentioned in your area.  Enjoy your little escapade in Virginia and thanks for thinking of me and of the gorgeous views of Big Sky country.

Marc,

I call it a snow fall.   I am not sure they refer to it by any other name here in Montana.  We are not equipped with ploughs in Red Lodge as they are in Montreal or in your area.  Luckily, most of the snow melts away within a few hours after the sun comes up.

Vegas Bob,

it sure seems that it is going by fast.   Does that mean I am getting older than I think?  :)

Thank you for the compliment!

John N.,

Thanks for stopping by to comment.  I can wait for at least another month before the blanket of white sets in.  I am still enjoying the blanket of yellow, orange and red with the nice blue sky.   I found it interesting that some white mixed in with the foliage colors as early as on the morning of the first day of October.  The snow had melted away by the time I drove by the same place later in the day.

John (ReMax),

I agree.  You have to be quick and opportunistic during this time of the year to capture the local scenery as the transition from summer to winter seems to happen much more quickly when you live at higher altitudes.

Oh no Gerry, I just came back from the beach in FL. and was surprised to see the snow. I sure do miss it here in GA, we only get few flakes here here and there. Beautiful colors with those golden and green hues them BAM the stark white, love it!

I trust your visit with your father went well? How could it not in such a scenic area as red Lodge?

Cynthia,

I hope you had a good time in Florida.   I enjoyed the way you described the passage from Fall to Winter.  It was a big BAM!  Please check my next post for more photos of the BAM transition.

The visit with my dad went very well.   He enjoyed the above seasonal temperature while he has here and he left before the first snow.  He thought I was kidding when I told him over the phone that he just missed the snow by two days.   BAM!  The big drop in temperature happened so suddenly.

Hi Gerry,  What is that white stuff??LOL!!  Actually, I love the snow, I like it when it blankets the ground and make everything so clean and white. The best part is sitting by the fire and looking at in from inside! :-)

So do you ever play the number 5 in the lotteries? LOL

When I went out to the boondocks last week, I finally took time and came home through Mount Laguna, the highest point in San Diego County at 6,150 feet above sea level. It was quite beautiful, and they have a contest each year for when the first snow will fall.

Gerry - That's an amazing pictures.  You can certainly tell what time of the year it is.  Fall colors, with the first sprinklings of snow!
