The Eco-Community & Conservation Land
THIS WEEK I had the good fortune to hike the sunny trails leading from an amazing eco-friendly community just minutes from downtown Asheville. This model for sustainable innovation, Hickory Nut Forest is one of the first ECO developments in the USA to combine wide-ranging land conservation with an eco-friendly community of green-built homes, to be powered by renewable energy -(wind power, hydropower , geothermal) - to create a "net-zero-energy community". Living in this conservation neighborhood means enjoying the forever-wild mountain forests, soaring cliffs and pristine, cascading streams, out your back door. You can walk for miles in the serenity of nature.
Hiking trails lead conveniently from the building sites into 800+ acres of nature preserve lands with waterfalls, streams, cliffs and mountaintop vistas. And, here a learning/teaching and community center is taking shape. Based on the model of the grist mill that once stood here, the building is being "built green" and features wood harvested with TLC from the site. (see video)

janeAnne - I have never seen anything like this before. The video was great... and I enjoyed the music as well. What a great enterprise to be involved with.
Hi janeAnne, I have been watching National Parks this week and this video is excellent and seems as a current example of the concepts taught through the Sierra Club and other envirnmental groups. As green construction increases , it helps to understand the part that all of our public lands and re-forestation will play in ur future.
I've been asked several times about how does one get an eco-community going. So janeAnne, I'll ask you how this one began. I'm wondering about county regulations, state regulations, a group of determined people...how, how, how. Wonderful that this is happening. Please keep us informed as it comes along.
I've been watching Ken Burns' amazing series as well. .."..our national parks...the best idea we've had..." I agree with you when you say, " it helps to understand the part that all of our public lands and re-forestation will play in our future.
This is great. It makes me excited to think that the other end of NC is getting a great eco community. By the way is this anywhere near Highland Lake? I was at Highland Lake last October and the owner of the Lake House was talking about a community there for retirees to be participants in growing food and all sorts of things. Great area you have there - hope some of the Eco-building finds its way to the coast.
