Statistics…

With all the real estate market reports that I see from across the nation and even some conflicting reports in our Charlottesville area, I just felt it was time to post this timeless quote. I hope that you enoy it as much as I do:

Illustration by Peter Newell from COSMOPOLITAN,  August 1898

Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.”

Charles, isn't that the truth! Statistics allow you to find the right answer to just about any question.

Charles, good one. You can always find the stats that make your point look good. The stats are the stats but how you present those numbers will determine how they are perceived.

Charles - I always liked the Twain quote, and it's more true today than ever.

That's funny!  I hate to put a lot of faith in statistics too, especially in our small market.

A lot  of truth in the quote. I know people that can come up with some interesting results form most any set of numbers.

Haha. I commented on your statistical post that it seemed to be a healthy market. As I wrote, I wondered how the data changed from past DOM and price points. If the seller's took losses in order to sell in 109 days- the market wouldn't seem very good to them! As with so much in life- it's how one looks at things.

My Dad was in Marketing Research for all his working life.  One of his fellow researchers had a fantastic quote that I have always enjoyed.  "Statistics are wonderful things. If you torture them long enough, they will tell you exactly what you want to hear."

Charles - That's a great quote, which truly illustrates much of the statistical data we are receiving currently.  Everything has an agenda. . .Even statistical data:-)

Reminds me of a similar quote about politicians, especially the "holier than thou" and "family values" politicians.
