When you think of Houston, the usual attractions come to mind, Minute Maid Park, Reliant Park, the Galleria and of course, NASA.  Now, what you really don't want to miss are these three distinct places of interest that make Houston unique

ORANGE SHOW CENTER FOR VISIONARY ART

Orange Show Center for Visionary Art - Houston, Texas

The Orange Show was a vision of the late Jeff McKissack, a Houston postman. With his death in 1980, a non-profit was founded by Marilyn Oshman a patron of Houston arts.  Their mission statement is, "The Center preserves, promotes and documents visionary art environments, provides opportunities for the expression of personal artistic vision and creates a community where that expression is valued."  The Orange Show offers hands-on programs for children & adults in addition to music, story-telling and much more.  Their annual fund-raising gala will be on November 7 2009.  This year it is being called Angels and Demons on the Bayou and is always one of Houston's most enjoyable events.

ART CAR MUSEUM

Miss Vicky - artist Dean Pauley, St. Louis - photographer Maurice Roberts 1997

The Art Car Museum celebrates arts and transportation.  The imagination in action here is incredible.  Cars, and other mobile machines, are transformed into moving works of art.  The Art Car Museum is affectionately called the "Garage Mahal."  The annual Art Car Parade is set for May 8, 2010.  It really isn't to be missed!

THE BEER CAN HOUSE

Beer Can House - courtesy of The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art

This is the project of John Milkovisch, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad.  He began with landscaping, using thousands of marbles, rocks & metal pieces to build his creations.  Then he turned to the house itself, adding aluminum beer can siding.  Ripley's Believe it or not has estimated than over 50,000 cans adorn this abode.  The Beer Can House is open to the public.  $2 for admission or $5 for a guided tour.

Houston's three unique attractions apparently caught the eye of the writers at Southern Living Magazine.  In this month's issue, Les Thomas writes an article called "Keep Houston Weird."  He gives us credit as the "most eccentric city in Texas" over Austin.  WOW!

Joyce - I feel the same way.  It's always good to hear about a city from a actual resident.
