Mount Bonnell - Covert Park - Austin TX Parks - Known as the highest point in Austin at 785 feet, is not actually the highest point, but people continue to believe it as it's a legend.

Mount Bonnell Covert Park Austin TX Parks

Mount Bonnell is named after George W Bonnell, who moved to Austin in the 1830's (some reports say 1836 while others say 1839) and was the publisher of the local paper The Texas Sentinel.  Prior to being called Mount Bonnell, legend has it that is was once called Antoinette's Leap, because of some woman who leaped to her death running from Native Americans.

And the name Covert Park?  That's named after the man, Frank M Covert Sr, who gave the land to Travis County and the City of Austin in 1939.

The climb isn't too bad.  I read somewhere that it's 106 steps, but I've never counted.

At the top, there is a pavilion to enjoy your views of the Austin Skyline or Lake Austin.

My daughter enjoyed making the climb as well as going up and down the steep rocks that enabled me to capture these views.

For as long as I can remember, growing up in Dallas, when people mentioned Austin, it was always, "Have you been the Mount Bonnell?"  I visited it for the first time in 1994, and it's a place you can go multiple times and never get bored.

Donna - So many thoughts come to mind here.  First, your daughter is precious.  Second, this is an excellent localism post.  The pics are great and I enjoyed reading about Mt Bonnell.  Third, I grew up in the foothills of the Appalanchian mountains.  Any location with an elevation of 785 ft was considered a valley!

J & A, Thanks!

Erik, You're so kind!  And yes, I guess the size does seem small, especially when it takes just a couple of minutes to climb it.

Lou, Always having a great time!

John, No play equipment, but still fun to run around and scare mommy when too close to the edge.

Judi, The first I went, I thought I needed hiking shoes, but you're ok with sandals!

Julie, I got a few different ones at my baby shower.  "My mommy will sell your house" and "houses for sale donna@donnahoms.com".

Donna, I can see how you can go up there many times and never get bored.  Look at those views.

As beautiful as it may be, it's not nearly as beautiful as the precious little girl standing there. :)

Great job letting everyone know about Covert Park, Donna.

And those pictures of your daughter are priceless!

The one of you and her is worthy of framing and hanging up in your new home!
