My owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in Mission ValleyUsually when I read about house fires in the newspaper, "the cause is under investigation."

The cause of three recent home fires had been determined by the time they made the newspaper:

  1. Many home fires are caused by unattended candles, which was the cause of a recent mobile home fire in Escondido. The fire displaced four people and caused $25,000 damage to the home and contents.
  2. A home fire in La Mesa was started by a fallen table lamp that overheated. I wish I knew what kind of table lamp this was, but I do know that lamps with halogen light bulbs are a common cause of fires because the halogen bulbs burn so much hotter than compact fluorescent and incandescent light bulbs. This fire cause $100,000 in damage.
  3. A more interesting cause of a home fire occurred in a townhome in Oceanside. Apparently a man dropped burning popcorn on the floor which then ignited items stored on the floor. Fire officials, though, said that storage was stacked chest high in some places. Property damage was estimated at $150,000.

Fire safety is something that should never be taken for granted. Here are some fire safety tips for your Mission Valley condominium:

  1. Smoke alarmInstall smoke alarms, test them monthly, and change the batteries every six months when you change your clocks for the beginning and ending of Daylight Savings Time.
  2. Install carbon monoxide alarms -- A byproduct of fire is carbon monoxide, a deadly gas that has no color or smell. In this case, though, we're more worried about our gas-fired appliances, like a water heater, furnace, and dryer.
  3. Make sure that there is a working fire extinguisher in your Mission Valley condominium. Have it inspected annually.
  4. Have an emergency exit plan that all occupants are familiar with, including where to meet outside in the event of an emergency.
  5. Know how to disconnect your gas, electric, and water. See your home inspection report which should note the locations, but if you need help locating them, feel free to call me.

I enjoy scented candles but don't use them because of the fire hazard.  I keep a few around to use on those rare occasions that we lose power.

It is important to make sure all the smoke detectors are working.  I didn't know until recently that they need to be replaced every 10 years.  We just had our replaced last year!  It give me peace of mind.

Hey, Jim - I had no idea that popcorn could catch on fire. Every time I overcook it, it's just a bunch of black stuff. Maybe it was the butter that caught on fire. A grease fire would make more sense.

Hey, Irene - I love candles, but I am so afraid of using them because I just know I'm going to forget to put it out before leaving or going to bed.

Hey, Joan - When I worked as a home inspector, we always recommended replacing smoke alarms at close of escrow if their age was unknown.

Hey, Robert - Fire extinguishers are something that should be in every home but I think few people have them.
