Speechless Sunday . . Older than the State of Georgia!

On my recent trip to Savannah, Georgia for the NC Realtors Convention (I know why is the NC convention in Georgia) I took an extra day for a little sight seeing.  I stumbled across this magnificent tree - it's called the Chandle Oak.  It's a live Oak.  I also learned where the expression 'Don't let the bed bugs bite' originated - in the early days the spanish moss that grows in the trees was used to stuff pillows - only problem - the moss is full of bugs!

Back to the tree -

It's estimated to be over 270 years old.

Has a circumference of 16 feet

Height of 50'

170' Crown Spread

Crystal - I HIGHLY recommend a trip to Savannah - so much history as Sherman did not burn the city during the war.  Great bed and breakfast's as well as a nice Hyatt and Westin on the Savannah river.

David - Fascinating information on the bed bugs ... I did not know that ... I always thought it referred to dust mites ... BTW great picture of a stately tree

How weird is this? I'm checking out your blog for the reciprocity "tag, you're it" thing, and I find this beautiful tree!!!  What a GORGEOUS tree! And, I had no clue about the 'bed bug' thing either.

Why did you make this a 'Members Only' post?  You should share this with your community!

Oddly enough, I just wrote about the largest tree in Oklahoma - check it out:

Beautiful old oak tree and I love the Spanish moss. Another thing I miss about Florida.

Great shot of the Oak.  Savannah is one of our favorite places to visit.  Didn't know that's how the bed bug saying got started.  Good bit of trivia too!  Thanks.
