Speechless Sunday- Well sort of. I met this lttle guy while visiting the Ehrman Mansion at Sugar Pine State Park  in Lake Tahoe. As I was out walking the grounds , a couple were having lunch and this ground squirrel had already joined them for lunch. He didn't seem the least bit camera shy either. He seemed as facinated with all of us as we were with him. After he would take the food, he sorted stopped and posed a bit before scampering off only to return for more to eat. I think he knew he would get his photo plastered on the internet in a blog post and that others might regognise him and be willing to share their lunch with him as well. So take a good look and keep your eye out for my new friend.

William,

This is a very funny picture. Guess you had enough patience to get the squirrel to "trust" you.

By the way, noticed you got a new picture, a photographic one.

William--It looks like the little guy was pretty taken with you too...maybe it was that big chunk of bread on your hat! We discovered one winter that squirrels LOVE bananas...They had chewed through our garbage can lids to get to the peels. We would cut up slices and put outside our front window so our cat could watch his "friends" come up and eat. It was great until we discovered the red squirrels like eating cedar wood and started chewing up our deck when the bananas were gone.

William - That is an especially cute squirrel, and he is ever so friendly.  I couldn't help but laugh while I was at Zion.  The squirrels there were very fat and very friendly.  There were signs everywhere saying there was a $250. fine for feeding the wildlife. . .Somehow, I think folks weren't paying attention:-)

Hi Bob and Caroline, I am glad yo enjoyed this. The setting was very special and so was the situation.  I had taken lots of squirrels and chip monk photos but this little guy seems to like having his picture taken. Oh and he brought his girlfriend over as well. Before long I think there 3  taking turns getting in on what the family was offering.

Hi Janice, I had similar thoughts. He was just too cute for words. He did seem more like a pet than a wild creature.

Hi Teri, It wasn't my had. It belonged t the couple that were feeding him. Anyway your story is a familiar one. One sister found one in her yard ( a baby and it had an ulcerated stomach. So she took him to the Vet and they fixed up. But she had to protect while he healed and she used a pet bed to keep him in. One day she came home and he had eaten the top off her hutch in the dinning room and used the draperies as a means of hanging on to something. She was very happy that he was healed enough to go back out in the wild. In your case, the feeding meant that he was sharpening his teeth on your wood deck. I am sure that squirrels are best left in the wild and feeding should only happen out in their world. But when little cute creatures touch our hearts , we think food, as this family did.But I am grateful t have these photos anyway, just because he was so cute and liked the camera.

Hi Missy, They are beggars and because they are cute, the are mostly successful. I hear they are big on peanut butter. Can you imagine watching trying to get it off the roof of their mouths. I will be that is a funny sight.

Hi Mryl, I expect there is good reason for the sign. As humans , we associate food with love and feeling good. I guess that is why so many people are overweight. Human food in a squirrel's diet or any wild animal that must fend for themselves, the human food must taste pretty good and that learned behavior can actually cause them to suffer the same maladies as humans have from over eating. Not to mention the possibilities of what people give them. Candy and junk food. As one acquires a reverence for nature, which I am getting a bit late in life, as I see more and more, good intentions are or at least can be harmful ( in some cases deadly) So, as cute as feeding them is, having respect for their lives is way more important. Though most of us don't think in those terms when these cute little creatures touch our hearts.

Hi Susie, Thanks. I need another camera too. A bigger more powerful one with a bazillion mega pixels. I have come to realize that there is no such things as too many mpixels (sp). I am loving putting all these pictures on and I think people generally like them. It is easy to love the ( blank) photo and get their 25 points. I like it since I don't have to write anything that no one wants to read anyway. Truthfully, it does take just as much time to get a photo ready, size it etc and get it up with a decent title.

Now I want a real photo blog, where I can actually create so interest for where I live. A picture here, slide show there and a little video to bot. Sounds like something consumer might also like if they are going to move here.

Localism started out with just photos and a few writings. I would to put up all the communities in San Diego County , special events etc as the categories. What do think of this idea? You are the real photographer I really do respect your opinion.

Hi Richard, Since I got my new camera and see the possibilities, it just seemed to make sense to try and capture as much of my world in photos as I could. I must admit I enjoy it and hope one day to greatly improve. I think about all the amazing photos I have seem others take and hope that opportunity meets inspiration and allows me to be the catalyst for some very special moments captured for perpetuity.

Hi Joan, I loved looking at them and they seem intrigued. I am sure it was the food more than me. Though I have this Hummingbird that likes to be in face ( literally just a couple inches away).  I think we converse. OK, I talk and it flutters but he comes back often when I am outside. Maybe he thinks I am his mother, LMAO. I often thought of trying to capture him in a photo but the lens is longer than the the distance he is away. Then it also might scare him and I'd rather not. He likes things as they are.

Hi Elizabeth, Good luck met opportunity and there you have it. He didn't run. He had several friends ( one was a girlfriend I am sure ) and she and the other little creatures seemed delighted that this family had lots of food with them. Feast or famine I trust.

Hi Sharon, He was cute and I could have snatched him as a new pet. But I wouldn't really do that , his home is in Tahoe and I will have to go back to visit him. He sure was cute. Even his coat glimered in the sun. Whatever his diet was, he sure wore it well.
