Beautiful... I love Hawaii... it is so beautiful and the sunsets are breathtaking... California isn't bad either.

Betty, winter in Hawaii is glorious. No snow to shovel and warm tropical breezes.  We are lucky to have to opportunity to enjoy it ourselves and share it with others.   Thanks for commenting.

Joan, yes we do get some great sunsets in CA but never as often as in Hawaii. Thanks for stopping and commenting.

The green flash is a real thing but you can't turn your back on the setting sun, even for a split second or you will miss it.

Donna, I take many photos of sunsets (everywhere) and it's hard to pick the best.  Thanks for commenting.

Gary, this is a stupid question but does Hilo have sunsets since it's on the eastern shore?  Hilo is a great get-away for us when we want a big change in scenery and climate.  Thank you for commenting.

Richard...true or not, it's a great excuse to sit by the pool and wait for it, mai tai in hand.  Mahalo for commenting.

Never heard of the green flash before. Maybe a video post for a follow-up, shot from just behind a mai tai glass?

John, I don't know why it's so popular in Hawaii and not other west coast locations,  but everyone heads for the lookout spots and oceanfront bars and there's a lot of talk about "the FLASH" as the time approaches.  It happens on the horizon just as the sun disappears at the water's edge.  But if there are clouds at the ocean/sky horizon you don't see one.  You have to be there in person.  I've never captured it with the camera although if I have enough mai tai then I might think that I can.

I know that there are some "reasonably" priced flights from Vegas since it's a big destination spot for Hawaiian residents.  You gotta go!  Cheers and thanks for taking the time to comment.

Ginger -- I learned something new from you.  I have been to Hawaii 5 times but yet have never heard of the green flash.  Now, you have me tempted to want to endure another 10 hour plane right in search of one.  How many green flashes have you seen?

That sunset is breathtakingly spectacular!

LOL, Ginger, I thought this was a clever caption for va-ca rental...as in waiting for the green flash of cash. Never knew it was such a real photography term.

Judy...that's amazing.  I think that it has become a bit of an urban legend, but I'm surprised that you haven't heard of it.  You must not hang-out in oceanview bars at sunset. (: I can't count how many times I've seen it.  I've be trekking to the islands for almost 40 years and now it's great to have our own place.  Even the six hour plane trip is hard to endure but we get there 3-4 times a year.  Headed back in December.  Mahalo for stopping and commenting.  Cheers!

Cyn, I'm not that clever with words, but the vaca-rental business is good.  Kinda surprising in this economy.

BTW, it's not a photography term...I don't think that it can be captured with a camera because I believe it's a phenom that happens between the eye and the sun.  Thanks for commenting.

Ginger ~ What a spectacular sunset shot!  Makes you just want to hop on a plane and head for the warmth doesn't it?  Especially now here in Portland, we've just had one of the hottest summers and September on record, but this morning it was down to 42*  (Brrrrrr)

Maureen...it's even better when you know that it was taken from our condo complex.  I have thought about the warmth too for this past week.  We also had a radical weather change, from Summer to Winter in one week.  We even had snow in the high country mountains yesterday morning and it was 37* at our house.  You said it...brrrr!  We have a spare bed in December, join us. (-: Thanks for your ongoing support!

Kathy, aloha and cheers!  Mai tai is my favorite tropical cocktail.  Sitting at the pool, sipping the cocktail and watching for whales and dolphins, what could be better?  Thanks for commenting.
