Could you show some leaves?  It's hard to give such a guess on trunk alone... Or I could guess Apple tree since Washington is known for apples.

What a gnarlylooking base. It looks like a grown up version of an old apple tree I once had in the back yard.

Alexander - I have to agree with Donna with it being an apple tree.

Hi everybody, Yes this is known as "The Old Apple Tree."  Planted in 1826 it is the last known surviving tree planted by the first European Settlers to Vancouver in the "Oregon Country."  It may also be one of the most expensive trees in the state, not only for its doctor visits to tend to its health but, two major area freeways converge near this spot (and the BNSF railway runs right next to it as well), and the freeway interchange had forced designed changes to ensure this tree was both accessible to pedestrians and not harmed.  Thanks again!  John and Kathryn

I was too late again!  I guess that I will have to get on earlier next time!  Great photo!

Hello Tony and Darcy, I think Donna's knowledge of Washington State's great apple economy gave it away!  Thanks!  John

That tree gets some respect!  I never would have guessed an apple tree.

Hello Georgina, this tree certainly has had respect and tenacity over the years to survive for so long!  John

John,

All I can say is that if it's the oldest tree it has come by its wrinkles honestly. :)
