Hamilton Harbour Cruise

This is a great time of the year to head to the lakes or harbours to catch the migrating wildlife.  Excellent places to find differenct species are Oakville and Bronte Harbours, LaSalle Park in Burlington and Cootes Paradise and Hamilton Bay.  Bring your camera, enjoy the sights and sounds and enjoy walking along boardwalks and piers.

Judging from your photos, I would say you have a lovely afternoon.  I immediately recognized the comorants though I had never seen them in U.S.  When I was a teenager, I was attended a cormorant festival in Japan in which they put rings around the necks of the cormorants and used them to catch the fish that we had for dinner.

I love taking pix of birds.  Even really homely ones.  Sea birds are great...relatively big....often good posers.

Thanks for these shots.

Jenny - Did you have a previous career as an Oakville bird trainer?  You have many posts of birds doing various things, posing, and trying to get their 15 minutes of fame when you are at the harbour, parks or elsewhere in Oakville.

The Hamilton Harbor cruise looks like it would be lots of fun!   Do they also have dinner cruises?

Sooooo, that's what they're called.  I was watching them the other day, wondering what they were. :)
Great photos.  I hope you weren't driving when you shot those. :)

Jenny,

Those are great photos especially the ones of the cormorants!   I am amazed at how the shadow of the cormorant shows up in the second photo.  Is that a shadow or are my eyes in need of a checkup?

Jenny > Isn't it great the way the birds have returned to this area of the Bay. They love that little island. Unfortunately they create an unpleasant smell. We had a house on the hospital garden tour in Indian Point which looks at their island. When the wind shifted watch out! Whew! LOL

Jenny - I have heard that Cormorants may well be the latest threat to great the lakes fish population as well as other species who depend on a healty supply of fish  ... they are relatively new additions to inland waters as they were traditionally an ocean or sea bird ... they are voracious eaters and consume enormous quantities of fish

Hi everyone, Thanks for your comments.  Sorry I am so tardy in responding.  I just arrived home today from a week's holiday in Cuba.  Fun in the sun.  Back to reality now.

Hi Kevin & Monica,

Thanks, the waterfront is a great place to see different birds, especially at this time of year with the migration.  I didn't know what they were either until my son told me.

Thanks Steve,

It was a great afternoon for a walk and it was nice to meet up with my son for a coffee at the end.

Hi Judy,

A cormorant festival?  That would be an interesting sight to see.

HI Steve,

I know you like your bridges.  The one bridge is a highway that takes a lot of cars into the city of Hamilton.  The one beside it is the more scenic road and it takes you to the different Royal Botanical Gardens.  Another place I need to visit someday.  I've only been a couple of times years ago on field trips with my kids.

Hi Debra, Yes they are quite iteresting to look at and now I'm worried after reading Sylvie's comment.  It's scary if they are depleting our lake's fish population.

Hey Jim,

I'd love to see some of your homely bird photos.  I was surprised to see a great blue heron and lots of egrets (or maybe cranes) in Cuba last week.  I felt like I was right at home.  They also had the turkey vultures I photographed a few weeks ago near my home.  Didn't see any seagulls though.  Kind of strange.

Hahaha Marc, No I wasn't a bird trainer.  I can't even train my own kids.  I do get a kick out of watching them now though.  Those ducks and swans sure can do some strange things with their necks.

Hi Kris,

Funny that this boat cruise is only a half hour from my house and I never knew it existed until I saw it that day.  I think they do have dinner cruises as they were setting up the tables when I was walking by.  I will have to check it out next summer.

Hi Charles,

I think they have an interesting looking head and beak.  I read up on them a little and they swim with part of their body submerged like in the photo I took.

Hi Sylvie, no I wasn't driving.  I had a long walk that day.

Al & Peg, I'm late getting back to commenting here.  Seems like the trip is just a fading memory.  I don't know what the photo was that you had in your comment.  It has disappeared.

Hi Mary, I thought it was a neat bird also but now reading Kathy's comment below about them being a threat to our fish population I'm having second thoughts.

Thanks Monique, It really was a beautiful day.  I love the waterfront at any time of the year.  Always something to see.

Hi Gerry, I had to go back and look at the photo again.  By golly I think you are right about the shadow.  I'd never noticed it before.  You are VERY perceptive.

Hi Melinda, I try to sneak away whenever I can with my camera.  Our trees are just starting to be quite colorful so I think it's time for a hike when I get a chance.

Thanks Karen, It was nice to meet my son at the end of my walk for coffee.  Nothing like a nice cuppa on a patio overlooking the water.  Aah heavenly.

Hi Charles, welcome back.  You can come look at him anytime you want lol.

Hi Jennifer, I'm sure the fall colors are looking great now in your neck of the woods.  I will stop by your blog to see if you have any photos.  How is the new bridge doing?

Hi Teral, prices were down to 93 cents a litre but have jumped agaiin to 98 cents.  Now I hear they are to rise again.

Hi Janice, Yikes I never thought about the smell.  Are they there all year or were they just migrating, I wonder?  I saw lots of turkey vultures in the cemetery in Burlington overlooking the bay.  Then when I was in Cuba a couple weeks ago they had them there too.  I wonder if the vultures I saw have migrated south.

Hi Kathy, thanks for the info.  Do people actually eat fish out of Lake Ontario?  I see people fishing in Bronte all the time.

Hi Lana, and I love that you stopped by.  I have fun taking photos now.  I never did it before I started blogging.  Now both have become habits.

Thanks Jim -  I love your zoo photos.  What better photo op is there???
