  • Catskill Mountain Fall Foliage Ride

Today was such a beautiful day so we decided to do something as a family.  Our choice was to take the Catskill Mountain Fall Foliage train ride.  The Catskill is a beautiful area and we have been to the area many times but had never been on the train.  Well today we decided to change all that.

We boarded the train at the Mount Pleasant stop and it went south along the Esopus Creek , thus this train ride is referred to The Scenic Esopus Creek Route.  This leg of the ride provided some wonderful mountain views as well as magnificent flowing creek scenes.  Only one stop was made in this direction, at Cold Brook.

On the way back we came to a crossing where the conductor literally got off the train to act as the crossing guard since there were no signals.  The final stop was at the Phoenicia Station were we found a railroad museum.

At the museum we saw many artifacts as well as photographs.  One which caught our attention was that of the Poughkeepsie Rail-Road Bridge which was recently turned into "The Walkway Over The Hudson River".  This museum had some exhibits that was related to the New York Quadricentennial celebration.

It was a delight conversing with the crew who were so excited to tell us all about the history of the rail line and what they are presently doing to further restore and lengthen the rail line.

Here are some facts We found out about the railroad.

  • This railroad line was once a passenger line and traveled as far as Oneonta until 1954.
  • We were told these rail track came very close to being removed but fortunately it did not.
  • The Empire State Railway Museum located at the Phoenicia is a great place to learn more about the area history and is designated a historic site.

Very nice Jennifer.  It sounds like a wonderful way to see the beautiful leaves and learn some history of the area.  Will have to check it out someday.

Sounds like a nice way to spend some quality time with the family. Fall colors...nice to see since in Florida the only fall change in colors is something about wearing white or beige or something like that after Labor Day...I never get that right anyway so I just wear black year round!

Jennifer, This is something I would just love....I can't think of a better way to see all the colors.  I'll have to mapquest the Catskills again, it's beautiful but a long ride for me.

What a fun way to spend a family day. We are starting to have our leaves changed but not near at peak yet.

I love trains so this would have been a fun trip.

Sorry to you all, It has been hectic so I am just getting back here.

Paddy it is not so far away for you and I think you would enjoy the ride. I know you love doing stuff as a family so this would be ideal. We had lots of fun.

Gary with your choice of color you would be at home in NYC...lol  The leaves weren't at their peak yet,  still there was enough color.  Coming from an island I know what you mean about Florida.

Carole What you should do is make a weekend of it.

Joan I am glad that they are working at lengthening the ride.  Right now that involves fixing bridges and the track.  To think these tracks were almost ripped up, glad someone had some foresight.

Missy the leave were not at their peak butthe train ride was rather scenic.  Besides looking at the foliage the train traveled along the lovely Esopus Creek.

George it was a win win and most of all shared with the family.

Karen - I still need it to be more colorful, I want to take a cruise on the Hudson River when the foliage peak.
