Sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, World Habitat Day calls attention to the lack of adequte housing that affects much of the world.

As Realtors it is very easy to get caught up in the day to day business of listings, unrealistic buyers, tortured short sales, price points, etc. etc.  And in many ways we live in a small cocoon of indulgence - helping people buy and sell houses.

But there is a larger world out there - one where people live in tents or slums or substandard housing - and will for the rest of their lives.

I honestly don't know if I will ever really be able to make a difference in the life of someone in Africa or Latin America or Asia but I do know that at least educating myself is the first step.

Hi Michael ~ I hadn't heard of this - thanks for bringing it to our attention and for including all the great links.  While we're busy chasing down the perfect place complete with the latest and greatest updates we should take some time to think about how the rest of the planet is housed.  Thanks again.

Liz - It does make you think twice about master suites and gourmet kitchens doesn;t it?  Glad you were interested.

Susan - Thank you, I know some Realtors get involved with Habitat for Humanity and hope this will be impetus to go one step further.

I have traveled through lots of developing countries (most recently Ethiopia) and it always makes me appreciate just HOW GOOD we have it here. From running water to high speed internet. It just helps put things into perspective.

Julia - I think the challenge is that although we have some of the same condidtions in this country (!) we have the means and the infrastructure to correct them - developing countries don't and thus the need intensifies.
