SOCIAL NETWORKING - TWITTER vs FACEBOOK, FRIEND OR FOE

By
Industry Observer

I can certainly relate to anyone's dilemma about whether to interact with social networks, how to go about it, and trying to determine which ones to use the most. Below are my thoughts about a couple of them.

I have found TWITTER to be cold and feel somewhat disconnected due to the spammers, ad posters, and users that think it is a race to see how many followers they can amass. Where is the friendship and relationship building?, the personal end that leads to business? I feel an attitude of "What can you do for me?"or "If you don't give me some business I will unfollow you!"

FACEBOOK on the other hand has been a social networking savior for me as I have reconnected with old high school friends and stay in contact with others, and network with colleagues in my field of expertise. I am finding out that just a short comment about something that is important to them will grow your on-line relationship and reputation with them and remind them that you DO care about their presence in your network and that you are there to assist them, and their friends and family, when they need you.

Many feel that the games associated with FACEBOOK are a waste of time and too time consuming. In my humble opinion, the games are a perk of the system. It is an opportunity to have some recreational time with your friends, an additional time of bonding and sharing common interests, to say "Hey I'm not just interested in what you can do for me, I have time for you too.

Of course one must assert some self control and manage your on-line time productively but if you use it properly and balance it within your self-marketing time-line you will reap rewards from it. Not only from a business perspective but a personal perspective as well. It would be foolish to ignore the 6th largest country in the world, and by user population that is exactly what FACEBOOK is. Life is short but friends are forever. Happy Networking!

That's for sure that FACEBOOK can't be ignored.  I enjoyed your closing paragraph the most.  Thanks Ron!

Great posting.  I agree there is value-add to social networking sites, but as you said the key is managing your time and use of the network so it works for you.

Facebbok has opened up many doors from past friends, classmates and new friends.  By far I spend more time there, then any other site.  I agree, Twitter just doesnt feel like social networking....but I live and learn....

Although I have seen no concrete results of visiting and posting on Facebook and Twitter, since it doesn't take much time to do so, I routinely make a presence.  Like many marketing things, it just requires consistency.  I don't get a great response to my post cards sent out to my farm either, but I still do it. ; ))  What was it they said about "insanity".....?

Hi Ron - I think Facebook has a lot of untapped potential yet, particulary in Fan pages and Groups. And I think you're right about the '6th largest country in the world' -- it's simply too big to ignore.
