I can certainly relate to anyone's dilemma about whether to interact with social networks, how to go about it, and trying to determine which ones to use the most. Below are my thoughts about a couple of them.
I have found TWITTER to be cold and feel somewhat disconnected due to the spammers, ad posters, and users that think it is a race to see how many followers they can amass. Where is the friendship and relationship building?, the personal end that leads to business? I feel an attitude of "What can you do for me?"or "If you don't give me some business I will unfollow you!"
FACEBOOK on the other hand has been a social networking savior for me as I have reconnected with old high school friends and stay in contact with others, and network with colleagues in my field of expertise. I am finding out that just a short comment about something that is important to them will grow your on-line relationship and reputation with them and remind them that you DO care about their presence in your network and that you are there to assist them, and their friends and family, when they need you.
Many feel that the games associated with FACEBOOK are a waste of time and too time consuming. In my humble opinion, the games are a perk of the system. It is an opportunity to have some recreational time with your friends, an additional time of bonding and sharing common interests, to say "Hey I'm not just interested in what you can do for me, I have time for you too.
Of course one must assert some self control and manage your on-line time productively but if you use it properly and balance it within your self-marketing time-line you will reap rewards from it. Not only from a business perspective but a personal perspective as well. It would be foolish to ignore the 6th largest country in the world, and by user population that is exactly what FACEBOOK is. Life is short but friends are forever. Happy Networking!
