As I was pulling out of Chick-fil-A this morning with my sweet tea and a delicious sausage and cheese biscuit, I saw a lady pull into a parking spot that apparently another guy was waiting for. Well, the other guy was obviously upset, so he laid on his horn...not for a few seconds, but for at least a minute. The lady didn't get out of her car. She probably knew that what she did was wrong and was afraid to face the wrath of the guy honking his horn.

While I was driving back to the office, I was thinking: What would I have done if I had been waiting for that parking spot and that lady pulled in quick to "steal" it from me? Would I have laid on my horn?

As real estate agents, we have to be careful of how we act when we are out in public. The person who cuts you off in traffic, the person who jumps in front of you at the grocery store, they might be your next client.

How are you going to feel if you flip somebody the bird and the next day you are trying to show them how professional you are and how you are the right person to sell their home? Even if you were right and they were wrong, do you think they would want to ride around with you and look for houses to buy? I am not saying to let people walk all over you, just pick your battles. Every little thing doesn't have to be an "incident".

In this day and age of social networking, a temporary bout of road rage could be devastating to your business.

As you go about your day today, remember: Every person you come in contact with today is a potential client. Don't shoot yourself in the foot from the get go.

This is the very reason many agents do NOT place a sign on their car.

You are right. We must be courteous no matter what.  Take the high road and let things go like getting cut off.  Of course...I don't know that I'd want them as clients. If they cut me off in the parking lot, they are prob. the type to want to cut (discount) my comission, too. Right?

Morning Johnny.  Well, pretty funny story.  You're right of course.  You never know when your next client is standing in front of you !

Joe...you had me at sausage and cheese biscuit.  LOL  Just kidding.  That actually happened to my mother once just after she had her lettering put on her vehicle.  Her husband was driving and someone almost sideswiped him and gave him a dirty look.  He flipped him the bird, and my mother about had a coronary.  That person knew EXACTLY who was flipping him the bird!  Wish I could have seen it.  I've never seen them flip anyone the bird in my entire life.

Your right Johnny 'pick your battles' and Edward is right too, can you imagine 'flipping' while advertising who you are???  I just think if someone needs the parking spot that bad, let em have it, their day must be worse than mine. - P

LOL, So True.  When my husband drives my Durango he knows there is no flipping or obnoxious honking allowed.  I do find though when I go out of town, I am a little more agressive.  I still refrain from the 'bird', but a little extra horn sure does feel good once in a while!!

very good advice.  great post makes you think of the consequences of our road rage.

My husband always says "if your name wasn't on this vehicle, I would have.......".  Lucky for me having my name on my vehicle makes me feel better when he is driving :)

Sonja---Some people accidentally cut you off, so not everyone who does it is bad. Plus, isn't a cut commission better than no commission?

Bill--- I play basketball and I am a "big" (6'4"), so I get hacked ALL THE TIME. If would be easy to lose my temper. I just have to keep thinking that they may want me to sell their house some day!!

Lina---Funny story. That is why I don't let my wife drive my car!!

Al & Peggy--- Picking your battles isn't always as easy as we think!

Michelle---Just make sure that when you are "flipping the bird", you are also saying "I am the #1 agent in this area!". Maybe you'll get the best of both worlds...

Cynthia---Your name helps your husband with anger management...you should charge for that! :)

I lost it a few years ago while driving.  My wife, who is also a realtor, looked at me with "the look" and said "Do you mind.  My name and phone number is on the side of this car!!" Never again.

Larry---Isn't it funny how "the look" teaches us our lesson very quickly? LOL

I've never "flipped the bird" to anyone(not since I was 14 or so), so I'm sure I'll never be in that position.
