What does your refrigerator say about you? Is your fridge a magnet free sleek stainless steel number, or a basic white model? Is it covered with your child's artwork or recipes and grocery lists? Some people cover this appliance with everything under the sun and others leave it as spotless as the day it was installed. Some prefer French Doors or Freezer on top or freezer on the bottom models. What message does your fridge send to visitors to your kitchen?

I have seen refrigerators that are very dusty on top. Most housekeepers may bypass this area as it is out of sight.  I hit the top of the fridge with a duster about once a month. It is a habit I picked up after dating a man that was 6'4". The first time he came to my house I was embarrassed by the look on his face when he walked past the fridge. When I realized why, I vowed to add that spot to the Sunday cleaning schedule.

Personally I think the bare fridge is like a blank canvas. I have a handfull of magnets and the "poetry" set on my fridge. Here are a few photos of various fridges for your amusement. Whats in your kitchen?!? Please feel free to add your fridge to this list in the comments section.

I love this post and have to say that it does  reveal a lot about the inhabitants of the home, Going a bit further, if you open the door, you will learn even more. It's funny but whenever someone at my office puts their personal home on the market, they always tell me they are cleaning the fridge out before I have a chance to preview!??!?!

Great post.  Our refrigerator has all the magnets on the side next to the garage door.  The front of the refrigerator is a magnet free zone.  My husband wouldn't have it any other way:)

Betina, Funny you should mention it, mine is on it's way out :)  I did away with MOST of the magnets years ago, the others can't be seen!

I enjoyed your post.  I suppose we could conclude that whatever in displayed on the fridg indicates how intrinsic the kitchen is to the family socialization.  In other words, if the photos of the family are displayed on the fridg then the family spends a lot of time in the kitchen; if the family photos are in the "family room" that should indicate the family spends a lot of time in that room.  If they are  primarily displayed in the "living room", which in most homes is that rather sterile room which mortgage underwriters insist must be in the home but which usually contains uncomfortable furniture and is rarely used, that would indicate a formalization of the family structure, and I would expect the photos to be of museum quality.  Charlie Gantz, Greenwood, IN; J.D., M.B.A.; Owner and Principal Broker, Atlas Commercial Real Estate, LLC.

Unfortunately I have a stainless steel fridge and NOTHING will stick to it!  So, it is BARE - well, except for the finger prints that I have to clean everyday!  ;)

Betina, in my house my fridge has just 2 magnets , one is mine and other is my insurance agents. I definitely clean the top of the fridge, at least once a month. I didn't do this before, but when I had to reach something that was on top of the fridge one day, I saw how dusty it was and couldn't tolerate any more as call my-self prodly "cleanholic".

Hi, Betina:

I don't have kids, so I display my cats' artwork on the fridge instead. :) Miles likes to jump up on top of the fridge and watch me when I'm working at the counter next to it, so I have to dust it occasionally or see dusty footprints all over the kitchen.

Cheers,

Robin

My Fridge says I am very busy. LOL  We have school schedules (lunches, athletics, practice schedules, etc.). It reminds me how busy we are after the kids get home from school with all of the activities they are involved with.

I have a hard time finding the handle to our fridge.  That may be the reason I am still fairly thin.

Whenever I show homes, we always look at the refrigerators! They really do say so much about people!

Fun, thought provoking post my friend!

What does your fridge say about you?!!!

Dear Russell,

Perhaps I should do a blog on whats inside next? That is much more telling about a person's lifestyle. Hmmmm...

Dear Syreeta,

I aspire to have that perfect spotless fridge. Since I tend to obsess about work and I typically work late, I now have a collection of take out menus on the front. LOL

Dear Charlie,

Ilike your interpretation of the fridge appearance and its role in the family room. I agree that formal living rooms are on the way out!!

Dear Leesa,

Fingerprints, fingerprints,fingerprints... I hear the same thing from all my friends that have SS fridge.  I still have my plain vanilla white one with the amazing adjustable shelves. I am a creature of habit and some changes are harder than others. LOL

Dear Suma,

I know that top bit is easy to miss if your not tall enough to see it. I wipe it down once a month. I only remember to do it because its where I keep my dogs heartworm medicine.

Dear Robin,

I know what its like having cats. They always want to find the highest spot to watch what goes on in the house. LOL

Dear John,

I can imagine exactly what your fridge looks like. My last listing was a house with 3 teen-age girls and it had schedules for: chores, after school activities, soccer, dance recitals, music lessons, etc. Good luck keeping track of everything!

Thanks for the comment and for adding the only fridge photo! It is even cooler because you customized it for me!

Just a thought, but couldn't our refrigerators tell a lot about us by what is inside them?

My refrigerator is blank on the front and only a FEW critical phone number magnets make the side.  I like things to be SIMPLE!

Betina, the other day I saw a very high end house with a fridge that looked like Betty Furness should be standing in front of it doing an ad.  Sort of like your turquoise one!

I was just thinking I needed to take last years Christmas photo cards down a couple of days ago.  All I need is reminders for certain things. But I have seen some that are completely covered.

Dear Lisa,

I think simple is good, but if I had children I would absolutely have their artwork and photos on my fridge.

Dear Patricia,

I know what you mean. I am glad the days of June Cleaver are over. I could not imagine cleaning the house in pearls and high heels!?! LOL
