Sydenstricker School Closed in 1939

The Sydenstricker School in Springfield VA was the last one room school house in operation in Fairfax County.  It closed in 1939 but the building is still used today as a community meeting hall.  The belfry contains the original school bell purchased in 1920's from the Sears Roebuck store in Alexandria.

The school was named after the first minister of the original Sydenstricker Church next door built in 1909.  Rev. Syndenstricker was also the uncle of Nobel Prize Winner Pearl Buck the author of The Good Earth.

That is a great photo, Cindy!  Could the school house be any other color than red?  Very beautiful!

Thanks for the picture. My wife, an elementary teacher, would love to teach in a school like this.

Cindy:  Nice piece of history, and a beautiful building. At that point in time people would never have imagined how large schools would get.

Toula-I would guess that is why you always here to them refered to as the "Little Red School House."

Sharon-white for the churches and red for the schools.  Seemed to be the approved colors back in the day.

Mike-we are fortunate in our area to have many of these small gems tucked away in local neighborhoods.

Darrell-I don't know if teaching kids from elementary school through HS in one room today would be quite the same.

Chris Ann-only a few miles away you now have HS with thousands of kids.  It is pretty amazing.

Hello Cindy, that is cool that they've kept the building and maintain it so well.  In our neighborhood the old Felida School house is still standing, and used as a home so it has more than one room now!  The current owners painted it red as well.  When I was growing up the previous owners had it a tan color -- I like the red better.  Thanks!  John

John-I've had two projects that I thought would be fun, one would be to convert an old school to a home and other an older small church.  Sounds like you have someone that beat me to the first one.
