Tall Ships Coming to Portsmouth NH

Have you ever seen any of the majestic Tall Ships that visit various ports around the world?  If you lived in Portsmouth New Hampshire, you would have seen at least one every year.   Once a year for the last 10 - 12 years, at least one Tall Ship has sailed into Portsmouth Harbor.

This year, we're lucky enough to have THREE sailing into Portsmouth!!  These ships are just absolutely beautiful when you see them in person - pictures just really never do them justice once you've seen any of them up close and in person.

The ships coming to visit Portsmouth will be here July 6, 7 and 8, and will be docked at the State Pier on Market Street in the downtown area.   These ships represent three different classes of sailing vessels.

Tall Ship

The Pride of Baltimore II is a 157 foot replica of topsail schooners that were used during the War of 1812.  This replica was built in 1995.  The original Pride of Baltimore was built to navigate the British Blockade of US ports during the war.

This beautiful ship is owned by the citizens of Maryland, and her mission is: "to promote trade and tourism in the state of Maryland; to represent the goodwill of all Maryland residents; and to provide on-board and internet educational programs for American history and maritime sciences."

The Spirit of Bermuda hails from Hamilton Bermuda, and is a replica of a early 1800s sloops that were the first to use the now-common triangle-shaped sail.  The Spirit of Bermuda is 112 feet long, and is the newest of the Tall Ships.

Tall Ship

The Prince William is from Portsmouth England, and is coming to America to visit us as her sister city - Portsmouth NHThe Prince William is a 200-foot long sail training vessel that's run by the Tall Ships Youth Trust.  This ship is one of two tall ships used for educational purposes, and is a two-masted brig built in the late 1990's.

The Piscataqua Maritime Commission is the local group responsible for bringing the Tall Ships into our harbor each year.  And it's been said that this is the first time in about 100 years that THREE ships of this caliber will be in the port at the same time.

Each of these three magnificent ships will be open for touring on all three days.  The fee is $8.00 for adults and is free for kids.

Hi Sarah - hmmm, that's a great idea!  I will certainly let you know!

Monika - I'm going to try to catch them in a couple of places, if I can.  I'd like to see them sailing into the harbor, and then also catch them in the parade up the river to the pier, too.  Wanna come over and watch them with us?

Marchel - You should visit your daughter and then head up to Newport Rhode Island - you can catch more than just these 3 there.  THAT I would love to see!

Paula - If I can manage to get good enough pictures, you can see them that way.  I've never seen them come in in parade formation either, so am looking forward to this.

Thanks for all the great comments and for stopping by and reading!

Jay - Please do keep up with NH through my posts!  I do most of my posts on local content, so just subscribe to me and you won't miss a beat!   ;-)

Ines - I've seen some of the previous tall ships that have come to our area at sea, and they are gorgeous.  I've not seen any of these 3 and I'm really excited about being able to try to catch them in 2 places this time around.  I hope to get some great pictures to show off here, too.

Mariana - This part of the country is just loaded with history, it's where it all started, so to speak!  Portsmouth is a working port, and played a large role in some of the wars long ago.  We have a gorgeous church downtown that was part of Paul Revere's ride to warn that the British were coming, and we have some incredible forts here that played important roles in defending our country back then, too.  History certainly abounds here, for sure!!

Thanks!
Ann

Mariana - that was really funny!  Cute little song!

Monika - I had forgotten you were heading up there for the holiday.  I think we may be having some company over that holiday - I'll have to double check on that and let you know.  Thanks!

Hi Joan - we've never had 3 come in at the same time before, so I would guess there'll be a good number of people in the area checking this out.  There are plenty of places along the river to catch site of them, both on the NH side of the river and the Maine side.

Do you happen to know what was the name of the ship carrying the sailors from Holland? When docked they were the second ship in. They invited me and another girl to hangout w/ them and we crossed on ship to get to theirs. The third one was the one that held all the young children. Just wondering what the name of it was if you knew that would be awesome. Thanks.

Hi AJ - many thanks for reading my post on the Tall Ships coming to Portsmouth.  I did a follow-up post after they were here, An Historical Weekend with FOUR Tall Ships in Portsmouth NH!!  The Tall Ship you asked about is named Urania.  It sounds like you had a great visit with them!

Thanks again for reading!
