Do you exchange links with sites you don't know?

Every day I received at least one e-mail with a request to exchange links. My webmaster has told me through the years that this is very beneficial and that I should consider exchanging links with many others.

At first he was doing this with all types of companies all over the country. Many were requests from lenders that I am not familiar with and I felt that by having a link to their business on my site I was endorsing them.

At one point I decided that I only wanted to do an exchange with other real estate companies and REALTORS®. I often wonder what sense it makes for me to be recommending real estate companies in other areas when I am hoping to interest folks in a move to Lake Anna.

What are your feelings about exchanging links? I have never noticed this addressed in a post on Active Rain (although with the huge number of posts every day it is impossible to know for sure…and no I haven’t done a search).

I have noticed that members are not asking others members to exchange links so I figured that if savvy Active Rain members are not emphasizing this need with one another it may not be that important.

If it makes good sense from a business perspective I will do it but if it does not I would like to get rid of the ones I have and ignore future requests.

I would really appreciate any and all comments.

Kate, you definitely want your website link on other quality related websites.  Send me your link details, I will swap links with you.

Kate it sort of tells people about the company you keep.

We do not exchange links-- there are people we list , but we would list them regardless of a link  -- some of them don't even have a website.

I've heard different answers from experts on this.  I think Google recognizes a direct exchange and may not reward you - so there are other schemes, or ways, to get around that.  I'm no expert, so I'd love to hear the 'definitive" word on this.

Kate,

I think "back in the day" this was a strategy to build up a presence and more credibility with Google.  However, these days I'm not sure that this strategy works and believe it can actually backfire.

NO! I definately do not link to anyone I don't know anything about. I don't care that they would give me a link back.

No I don't do link exchange with strangers, unless it's something that relates to my business.

I would not do it simply to get a link back. Anything that I do consciously that I put my name too  must be of a minimum standard. That's number one for me. And also I know about the link backs that Google may not like. That makes me all the more not want to do it.

This was a great question to bring up, Kate. We get these requests all the time, also. Usually from web masters trying to increase their SEO for their clients.

I don't believe linking with other real estate web sites is a plus for us.  I am not an expert but the consensus on your comments seems to agree with my assessment.

You only want to exchange links when the other site is strong and you are going to get a home page link from them.  Google has caught on to all the tricks, and link farms is an old one.  You will lose points in Google's algorithim for weak links and links that are coming from nothing more than link farms.  There is no coin flip on this.  Its well known in SEO/SEM circles that do this professionally and full time.

I exchange links, but only usually with people in related fields. I might add the odd website link if I find the site interesting
