I got an email from Twitter this morning, listed as a direct message from a man named Jose.  He's a Realtor in Mexico and he sent me this direct message:   Hey, I just added you to my Mafia family. You should accept my invitation! :)

I'd like to reply to Jose, the way I reply to all of my facebook friends when they invite me to be in their Mafia.  As a full blooded Italian, I don't believe I should play Mafia games.  I have an unfair advantage.  It just wouldn't be right! But I have this niggling feeling that Jose is making me an offer I can't refuse!

But honestly, I still don't get Twitter.  I stop by.  I sometimes say hello.  But each and every time I stop by, I feel like I walked into a party and everyone looked at me and just shut up.  It's like they were all laughing at a joke but I walked in about 2 seconds after the laughter died.

Can anyone explain to me why I would want to be part of Jose's Mafia family on Twitter??

How can Twitter expand my business, if I pop over there now and again to say I'm standing in line at the bank?  Or if I say I am listing a home tomorrow?  Or if I say I am heading out to the gym?  I can understand why people who know me might be amused if I twittered something silly, but why would anyone else care where I am or what I am planning to do, unless they were planning an abduction?

Help!

I don't play games on facebook, nothing wrong with it but just not my thing.

I get the invitations from folks on twitter too, DM's and I just ignore.

I have not closed a transaction from Twitter but that is not why I am there. I enjoy connecting with people who use to blog here, but now don't. I get lots of people coming to my blog from Twitter, because I syndicate there.

I have connected to local people and people that I would not know if I had not been there.

I know how you feel about going to a party...and not knowing anyone...I felt the same way.

I do get more interaction on my facebook page for comments and discussion.

I would not have any connection with any fool who thought it funny to use the "Mafia" identification to market their services.  What's next, imitaging a terrorist to try to get listings or customers???

Why would anyone even want to be identified with the Mafia???

I just don't get it.

Twitter??  I encourage my competition to spend as much time on Twitter that they can.

I don't get Twitter either ... not for business anyway... and although I have a Facebook account, I just don't go near it.  Active Rain takes up just enough time, and if this won't bring any new business, I don't think other places will either.

Hi Missy, way back when I signed up for twitter, I did do something that makes my AR posts show up over there.  I just enjoy the interaction with my AR friends more over on facebook.

Hi Lenn!  I grew up in the city of Philadelphia (in a bubble, obviously), because I thought the Mafia was a made up story until the first mob boss got killed in the 70's!  As far as the mafia games on facebook and twitter, I don't think anyone is using that to promote their business.  Just having some fun.

Sylvie, I have a lot of fun on Facebook and have found friends and relatives from the past and been reconnected in a fun way.  I love it.  Twitter, not so much.

Twitter seems to be 1/2 techno-hip folks who find this a natural way to communicate, i.e. texting on steroids.  The other half seem to be marketing "guru's" whose sole aim is to get thousands of followers.  So in my opion, 1/2 of twitter (probably more) are a lot like folks at a singles bar.  All milling around trying hookup for a business transaction.

Have you tried TweetDeck?  If you use Tweetdeck and divide people up into a local group (column), a real estate group (column) you might see the conversations differently. People can be in more than one column.

Tweetdeck will help you understand Twitter.

I have gotten business from Twitter.

Like all aspects of social media, it's a matter of consistency and scheduling time for it. Different groups prefer different outlets and I think a presence in as many places as possible is smart.

I syndicate my blog posts there - real estate & hyper local. I tweet about recycling or an upcoming event. I think the biggest challenge is keeping up with followers and getting rid of those you don't want in your network.

I don't play Mafia on Twitter and I don't play Farmville on Facebook.

Try Tweetdeck - seriously. Use your google reader and bit.ly and away you go! Maybe somebody who knows Twitter better than me can write a good tutorial on the topic.

Susan - we were actually having a conversation about this aprticular game yesterday at the C.A.R. convention.

Nope, I don't do it and I ignore them all. Even if I had time I would ignore them. I see no point, for me personally. I see the value in Twitter in connecting with other people, but also as a great source of information, more so than as a place for lead generation. Some folks are getting some leads but I still find blogging to be THE place.

Ignore those game requests and utlize Twitter for followers and following to coincide with your current business.  Learn social bookmarking and post 5 to 6 things each morning.  Prime time is 8AM to 10AM  Noon to 3PM and 7 to 10PM.  When you provide more value people will perceive you to be the expert.  Twitter is an additional tool in your arensal for success.

I agree these games can take up a lot of your time and can seem like a waste. I got caught up in Dope Wars. Hi Susan - I am in no way a Twitter guru but here are my tips:

You will probably never get anything out of Twitter unless you provide content of value (such as your blog posts) and you engage in conversations with people.

I use HootSuite to check multiple accounts and schedule tweets to go out at a later time.  This really condenses the time I spend on Twitter b/c I don't feel like I have to log in at "prime times" to send out tweets.

Hootsuite will also tell you how many people clicked through on the links you provided in your tweet.  It's fun to test different wording/times of the day etc.  By the way, I would agree with Eileen's prime times.  Hootsuite is a web based, currently free program.

I enjoy Twitter but it's like anything else, you get what you put into it!

Susan...  I didn't read any of the comments... but in my opinion, that is spam on Twitter and possibly a bad link with a virus. I received 3 of them and I just clicked the trash can.  Think about this, when someone on Twitter sends you a direct message, you can reply to it. I couldn't reply to all 3 direct messages asking me to join their mafia.  Makes me think Twitter is telling me something.

Overall, about Twitter in itself.  This is my opinion...  twitter is best used for getting messages and or news articles out the quickest... information. Some people chat on there, but it's more difficult than texting I think. Many people overall just have a lot of time on their hands. I tweet many of my blogs and ideas... have a few conversations, and that's about it. I stick to blogging and more on facebook. Some will agree and some will argue. I think you need to find a happy medium and not put as much stock into twitter.  Again, just my .02.

I can't think of anyone that I want to "follow" because they are just so advanced, smart, cool, or, powerful. Everyone should be following me!

Seriously, I think Jose invited everyone with a computer to be in his mafia. I placed the invite with the request to help the Algerian exiled President move his money into my account.

But, if a client wants me to update them on new listings - I can just put the info into the subject line of the email they have access to from their smart phone. Or, I could send them a text message.

Great post!

Susan,

If the name starts with MichXXXXXX, they're related.  Without going into a long family history, the Michaud's were one of the three major founding French families in North America in the 1600's.

Since then, the name has been anglisized to Meshaw in N. Carolina, to Cajun Michaeaux and all kinds of variations in between.

Every few years, there's a North American Family "reunion" of Michaud's up in Canada.  Never been, but I'd like to.

My Grandfather was born in Maine and has family on both sides of the border.  My Dad was born in Louisianna, I was born in the Philippines and all my daughters were born in TEXAS!

Bottom line, pick a rock anywhere in the world, turn it over and you'll probably find a Michaud.

hi Susan, Twitter is just another way that people can get to know you on a business level and also a bit on the personal. It's not something hat happens overnight but TweetDeck is certainly the tool to use. Another free tool (I like free) is ping.fm where you can update your status in many socil media sites with one click, I like that too. Mafia Wars .... it can be a stree releaver but a big time waster. If you are looking to join my mafia you're welcome to do so ... just kidding. But certainly take time for Twitter.

I hate to say it, but I really (still) don't get twitter.  Ok, I do use it to interact with a few friends and even read some local tweets (or it is twits?) but is that all there is?  Maybe I'm doing something wrong.  Then again, some say I'm 'doing' facebook wrong as all I usually do is interact with friends when time allows.  I will admit though, that tweetdeck makes it easier to join in the twitter party if you separate friends, locals, etc.

Btw, the next time you enter a room and everyone stops lauging, just take that one poor slingback off and whack 'em with it.  If that doesn't work we'll crack open a bottle (or two) of cabernet and have our own party.

Twitter's GREAT!  I use it all the time, literally every day: http://twitter.com/ScottSellsFL You never, ever, ever know where you're going to get your next lead or referral from, so why not get the exposure (it's free, remember?!) and market yourself to the world?  Everytime you 'tweet', you have a better chance of getting picked up in Google rankings, too.

Twitter's in it's infancy!  Don't expect so much from them just yet.  Let them mature a bit.  FB took time to grow up and so did AR....the important thing is to be there 'tweeting' and letting the public know about your listings, your closings, your clients, your shorties, what's going on in the market, education and MORE!

I'm afraid to say that if you're not on Twitter, you're going to wind up like Luca Brasi, sleepin' wit' 'da fishes like it says here:  “Sonny lit a cigar and took a shot of whiskey. Michael, bewildered, said. 'What the hell does that fish mean?' It wasTom Hagen the Irisher, the Consigliere, who answered him. 'The fish means that Luca Brasi is sleeping on the bottom of the ocean (with the fishes),' he said. 'It’s an old Sicilian message."

Marney, thanks!  I'll keep trying.

JL, you are right, Jamie would definitely have an unfair advantage!

Jean, thanks!  I am definitely going to check out tweetdeck.

Kathleen, great post!  Thanks for the link!

James, people swear by it so it must work for them!

John, I have been hiding the games and gifts.  Thanks!

Carol, I never had HBO, so I didn't get onto the Soprano thing.  My mom never missed an episode!  And I am still mesmerized by the Godfather movie.  It was so well done.

Hi Sharon, I'd rather talk to people and laugh than play the games too.

Jesse, did it ever occur to you, my love, that people stop laughing when I enter the room because they are laughing at me and my one shoe???  Hmmmm???  Oh well, let em laugh!  I can definitely laugh at myself too!  xxoo

Shellie, I spend so much time here on AR and Facebook already!

Scott, when I saw that picture, I real quick looked to make sure you weren't Jose, sending me a message!  Yikes!

Not sure myself Susan if Twitter can help a realtor - have tweeted and people just add me - don't even know if that is good or bad - no business from it however....

I'm on Facebook and Twitter.  I like Twitter for the FYI style (140 characters really challenges you to pack content into bite-sized statements).  On Facebook I ran into a lot of my relatives so I guess I have a "family" on Facebook.

However, I joined Facebook to use my page as another social media marketing/promotional platform for my real estate business but it has morphed into...into well I don't know what it is anymore.  I've started to glean the "friends" (many of whom are MLMers) and basically returning to my original intent.

Oh by the way I'm at Level 17 on "Mobsters" another mafia based game on Facebook :-)

Susan, great post!

I haven't seen the mafia thing on Twitter, but I have been spammed about 4 times from women with porn photos.  Disgusting!

Can someone tell me how to syndicate posts on Twitter?

Melissa, I think you just go to My Home on AR, then to settings.  It should be on this page.  Good luck!

Susan, you said it.  I so totally do not get the whole Facebook/Twitter thing.  However, I guess I have to go with "to each his/her own".  I check in on Facebook every once in a while, and all I see is grown people playing something called Mafia Wars, or Farmville.  Sounds first grade to me, but what do I know?  I am more focused on building my real estate empire, instead of putting a contract out on someone on a farm.  lol

Susan, I like your analogy of walking into a party and everyone gets quiet... I'm not sure I get it either - it may be like the Emperor's New Clothes, where everyone is pretending they understand what's going on in there...

I get so many of those mafia invitations that can be annoying. I don't play the games on Facebook because it takes to much time and have never taken the time to figure out the mafia game.

Twittering pointless information is about as useful as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.

I can say one thing for Twitter, I saw someone very angry on zillow about having their credit card charged twice for something they purchased...I sent a twitter, tweet, whatever, over to Spencer at Zillow and she got her problem resolved right away...I don't know her and didn't respond to her post on Zillow...She has no clue her problem was resolved because I asked Spencer to take a look at it on Twitter...My point is...it helped her get a response to a problem within an hour or two even though her rant, er, post on Zillow originally went unanswered for a day or two...

Susan, I am COUNTING ON YOU and others here in the Rain to tell me why I should be on Twitter. It to me is amusing at best with a "possibility" for connections. I read a disturbing editorial about Penelope Trunk, an author and blogger, at her company board meeting writing a Tweet that she was having a miscarriage at the moment, and was proud she didn't have to go through an abortion. The editorial centered on too much information which I guess is one reason I am not on Twitter not to mention my biggest reason, I have SO MANY other better things to do with my time. But if you can convince me, I'll listen. How being in the Mafia will help your life, got me!!

I think twitter will be seen as a fad in the future, and I have no idea how to play mafia on their platform. I participate every once in awhile on facebook because it builds a sense of friendship between members when you "help them out with a score". But definetly don't consider it a business tool. The ROI would be terrible for the amount of time needed for the game. And I am completely with you about walking into the party.I love my friends, but I don't really care to read their tweets about what they are eating.

The post was funny...but the comments rival for sure!  LOL  I got a Mafia thing from a friend's kid on Facebook the other day...and I decided that I didn't want that to show up on my FB wall...so I hid it!  Not sure that would go over as the game it's intended by quickly browsing prospective clients!  KWIM?

Kathy, the thing that freaks me out a little is all the people who are following me.  They are strangers, some not related to the real estate industry at all.  Some were porn.  Freaky.

David, level 17 eh?? That's a lot of levels!!  :-)

Jean, I so get facebook.  I love it.  I get a laugh every time I stop in.

Brian, I think some people genuinely like it and regularly get leads from it.  I'm just not sure how!

Kevin and Monica, I just don't want to learn the games, basically, that's the only reason I don't play them.

Jane, you are not alone!

Jose Berrios, you know I love you and if I knew how to play, I would be in your mafia, even if I did have an unfair advantage!  How's mom?

Hi Jesse Darlin'!!  Touche back at you!  xxoo

Fernando!  Finally, a man in my life with connections!  Thank you!  :-)

Russell, never underestimate a one legged man in a kicking contest!

Nicholas, I hide the game applications on facebook because I go there to share a smile or two and the games just fill up the page.

Chanda, and there is the real power of this kind of thing!

HI Arizona!  You may be right!

Gary, don't wait too long for me to explain Twitter.  I've learned more from this post than I ever knew!  Jason Crouch is the "go to" guy for Twitter info.  I do think you should be on facebook though.  As far as that idiot woman who twittered, or tweeted, or whatever it is we do over there, about her miscarriage and being happy she didn't need to get an abortion, that is just as classless a thing I think I've ever heard.  Some things should be private and I'm guessing she's just too ignorant to realize it.  Geez!

EmMee, love your picture!  I'm with you, although I think if all of my immediate friends were on twitter, and they were the only updates I was getting, it could be fun.  They are a funny crowd.

Christine, what does KWIM mean?

Hi, I'm back.  One more thing about Twitter.  If all you did each day was take your listings, template them on http://www.postlets.com and then upload them on Twitter (just another click or two while you're on Postlets), this would give you SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much more exposure in the marketplace.  Isn't the whole idea about real estate the need to get your listings in front of as many people as possible?  I can't understand why anybody would 'bash' or feel negative about a totally free tool that helps us all.

I'm reading all of the posts about clueless agents (and others) that 'just don't get Twitter'.  If you want to get it, go to YouTube, type in 'Twitter tutorial' and you'll finally get it.

Reporting from Sunny Florida, have a great day!!

I'm with you Susan,   Did you ever see that commercial where the son tells the father he doesn't have to tweet about where his next move is going to be.  I love it.  Facebook is good enough for me!

I get invitations all the time from Facebook and Twitter, too.  Someone is following me on Twitter.  It does sound so creepy.  And, what are they following?  Since, like you, I rarely stop by, why would they pick me?  Courtney Cox, sure.  Barack Obama, maybe, the Red Hot Chile Peppers, right.  Me?  Dull little me?  Get a life!
