Last Saturday was the Neighborhood BBQ that I wrote about in my previous post: How to Prove Your Value as an Agent, AND Make Friends ...

We all had such a blast, with a turnout of over 60 people! In addition to the neighbors, we also invited a few of our past clients and friends.

At 11am, we started setting up for the BBQ, by bringing our HUGE gas grill and supplies (paper products, drinks, coolers, beer ...) over to the park, with the help of a couple of our neighborhood friends. As people started arriving at Noon, we fired up the grill and Derek (the chef and grill-master) started BBQ-ing the hotdogs, hamburgers, brats and chicken that each person brought. There was also a great selection of side dishes, including: chips, pasta and leafy salads and desserts.

We handed out name stickers and pens - which made it easier to get to know everyone. That even became a "game" as some guests gave eachother nicknames.

Everyone who brought Diet Coke, was instructed to leave it on the picnic table in the sun, as WARM Diet Coke shoots much higher in the air than cold Diet Coke. (I learned this through an experiment I did the evening before, in the park with the neighborhood kids.)

Our first game involved all the kids. We gathered them in the field next to the pavilion and got all set up for a water relay. There were - by far - more kids than adults at this BBQ.
The game went as follows: We split the kids into 2 relatively equal teams (keeping a fair mix of older and younger kids) and had them dunk a sponge into a bucket of water, run across the field to another bucket and wring the water into that bucket. The first team to fill the "other" bucket was the winner. Every kid who played received a raffle ticket. The winning team each received 2 tickets.

From there, the kids ran to the playground and the grassy areas playing with the balls and Frisbees that were available.

Next was the Guessing Game: See, the night before, I had filled a clear canister with M&M's. I counted (and re-counted and re-counted and finally settled on a number...) how many I had put in there. Yes. Brain damage ... But worth it! After the water relay, I took the canister around to each person asking for their guess as to how many M&M's were in there. I told them that the prize for the person who guessed the closest, was to take home all the M&M's. Needless to say, there was a lot of competitive interest in this game. I loved watching all the different strategies people took to pick a number. Some folks used "gut" feeling - Some used a type of "math" and some attempted to put "a lot" as their answer...

There were actually 728 M&M's in the canister and the winner was the young lady who guessed 758. She was VERY excited! (So were her friends ...)

From here, I gathered all the folks who brought Diet Coke and sent them out into the field with a roll of Mentos. I explained the step-by-step process of opening the bottle, dropping in 3-4 Mentos and getting out of the way. Countdown ... 3-2-1 ... Explosions of Diet Coke went everywhere! Some as high as 20 feet into the air! All the kids - AND adults were in complete awe. "Wow! That was the coolest thing, ever!" I heard that many times over the course of the next couple hours.

After this, I handed out raffle tickets. After everyone had at least one (some of the kids had 2 or 3), I gathered everyone under the pavilion and started raffling off the balls that I had gotten for the kids to play with. I picked a couple volunteers from the crowd of children to be my assistants in drawing for prizes.

When I organized this, I directed people to the neighborhood blog that I created. On the blog, I asked for anyone who was self-employed/owned a small business to "sponsor" gifts for the raffle.

First, we raffled off a Latte Cup that was brought by a neighbor who is a sales rep for Longaberger. I let her present the gift to the winner and explain her role with Longaberger. After the raffle a few more people approached me asking if they could sponsor gifts at our next BBQ. (That was what I was hoping for ... Community Participation!) I gave away our sponsored $5-$10 gift cards to Starbucks, McDonalds and Jamba Juice. It was so cool to see so many excited people. People would come running up to collect their prizes like they were on the Price is Right!

Throughout the 2+ hours that we were there, everyone was talking, laughing and making new friends.

I was able to talk with each person about where they lived, what they did and even talked a little bit about the neighborhood market. I knew every home that was for sale and how much it was going for - so that came in handy! I used the opportunity with the M&M contest to sit down and talk with each person - kids, too!

As each person left, they thanked us for "such a great time!" and reminded us to PLEASE let them know when the next "event" was planned. I reminded them to check out the community website/blog for the pictures and details from the BBQ.

After we cleaned up and headed home, I checked my voice mails and emails to find 2 more additional messages from neighbors who were unable to attend.

One guy had a home-based business and wanted to help sponsor the next event, as well as help contribute to the next newsletter that we put together. (I had created and hand-delivered a one-page Community newsletter earlier last week.)

Another lady who ran her own business emailed me thanking me for the newsletter and asked if I would be interested in putting together a community garage sale with her in August. Of course I would! (We are working out the details this week ...)

Over the past couple days I have gotten even MORE emails and phone calls. One email read:
"By the way, love the community connection you have created.  We weren't able to make it to the BBQ, but thing it is great what you are doing and are looking forward in participating in the future."

The day was beautiful - the people were wonderful - we made many friends - and we have definitely established ourselves as the Community Experts!

Total cost: $25 for creating/printing/delivering the newsletters and invitations, $100 for prizes, drinks and accessories.

IT WAS SO WELL WORTH IT! We love our community ... and it shows!

Congrats on an amazing event! I would make this a public post - it says and shows so many good things about you and your neighborhood. And most importantly it shows that you're genuinely willing to get involved in your community. You've set the bar high for other neighborhood events around the country!

Mariana - Congratulations on such a successful event!  I applaud your interest in creating a sense of community.  That's something that is sorely lacking in most areas today.  And the added bonus of being recognized as the area expert is just icing on the cake!  Congratulations again!

Mariana, That was great!  I think it is a fantastic idea.  Wondering if I could do the same.  We have a swimming pool opening up in my neighborhood.  That would be a great reason to get the neighborhood together and at the same time get my name out.  I thank you for the idea.  I want to be like you when I grow up. ;)  Earl "The Pearl" Sorrells

Mariana...

Now this is what blogging is all about. Not only have you reached out and touched down on your area...

You have shown me that you are a Queen when it comes to party games.

Now I'm wondering if the mentos work on BEER. LOL.

P.S. No matter what you read around here...You need to just keep doing what you're doing.

TLW...ROAR!

Mariana - what a TERRIFIC party you put together, and what an awesome way to get to know neighbor's, have them meet each other and for you to establish yourself and your name with all of them!!  Fabulous idea!

We tried this Mentos and Diet Coke trick up at our State Association a few months back - didn't work as well as yours did.  Probably because we used cold Diet Coke - no one told us it had to be WARM.  Maybe I'll try it again, now that I know the real trick to this!!   ;-)

Love your idea of the prizes being donated and giving each of those who donated the opportunity to say a little about their business - THAT was an awesome idea, and what a way to help create goodwill!

Wonderful all the way around, Mariana!

Earl- The pool idea would be awesome!

Dena- ;) Thank you? I saved a few M&M's but ate them all. Nice to know what to send you for Christmas, though ...

Neal- Originally, I had made it members only, but because of John Novak's suggestion, I realized that it SHOULD be public.

TLW- Trust me on this one: Beer does not work as well. Not that I would KNOW .... And when was the last time that I listened to what "people" had to say?

Ann- Yes ... WARM Diet Coke is the "bomb" (tee hee!) I really love supporting small businesses - local businesses - and those who are self-employed (like us). This is a great place to start.

Jeff - What is Picturesque? I WISH I was a Mac user, but, alas, I am not... yet. The picture effects are MS Word 2007. Their photo editing options are really cool ... for a PC.

Ahh... except for the exceptionally long lower portion of the image, it looks like what you can do inside a cool little app called Pictruesque on the mac. That's a nice little effect. I'm better others would like to know how you created it.

Mariana~ I'm ready to move in to Greenhaven, awesome job. It looks like so much fun!

Jeff is right, I immediately noticed your photo effects with MS 2007 and tried it out, so cool! It does look like a"Turner Tool". But I have a question? I'm having a hard time saving the edited photo...what am I missing?

Jeff- Someday I will be Mac-Savvy, but until then, I will rejoicein MS upgrades. :)

Laura- I use the blog edit function, and post directly to my "other blog" from MSWord. From there I can copy the pictures to my AR blog. I have not tried to save the pictures individually though. I imagine that there would be a way, but I do not know ...
