Recycle your plant pots and save yourself some money by Ceil Winters

Summer is over and now we need to think about Fall and Fall Plants. Here are some tips that will save you some money. Spruce up those old clay pots.

                                                                    Mums are my favorite

Recycle those old plants pots.

1. Remove old plant and potting soil.

2. Use  soap and water and a scrub brush to remove grit and grime.

3. Rinse well and let dry completely.

4. If you want you can paint; I use exterior semi-gloss.

5. This is a good way to recycle all your old paint.

6. You can get creative and do lots of projects when you recycle.

7. You can even spray paint and spruce up old basket plant holders. Spray paint and ribbon go a long way.

8. While the paint is drying, take a nap.

9. While I'm napping I send Carl to the nursery to buy me some new plants. Any color mums are fine with me.

10. Always start with new potting soil.

11.The nursery has a great variety of fall plants to choose from.

Mums are my favorite. You can't go wrong and the colors are great. When it gets too cold outside bring them in and set around. You can enjoy them right up to the holidays.

If you are selling                                       your home adding fall flowers will look great after the long, hot, dry summer we have had here in Texas. When your mums get too tall, cut them down and they will come back again several times.

If you are buying a home in my service area of Comal County or Bexar County and surrounding area, please give me a call. Carl Wintes, Complete Inspection service 830-660-0131. I am an Advanced Home Inspector, License #3630.

Gosh Marchel you must have jumped right on my post. I love plants. Today I spent an hour taking old plants out of the pots and cleaning the pots. Some look better then they did when they were new. Fresh potting soil is in and now I have to add all the plants. I saw great mums at Walmart that I just had to have so  purchased several colors. Everything looks better already and has added some good color. I pray my twin fawns don't come nibble on them.

    Thanks for stopping. (ceil)

Ceil - I'm still enjoying my impatiens and geraniums in pots.  At least for another week.  Then I'll switch to mums.  Great ideas for pots.  I recycle my pots all the time and when my clay pots break, I use the shards to layer the bottom for drainage.

    Howdy there Ceil and Carl

This sure is a really fine idea, you have posted for folks, on a way to recycle their plant pots. I'll have to do some up, for Deb. And tell her my friend Ceil down in The Hill Country of Texas, wrote about doing this. Thank you kindly!

Rosalinda it is a way to definitely save some money. Have you looked recently to see the price of new clay pots? I did hae some that I  could not use at all I smashed with the hammer and threw the pieces in my rock garden, they added a little color and it was a way to use them.

Dale I let the little girl next door come over to help me and she had fun painting on the pots. Art class 101.

Michael, recycle, recycle, recycle is what we keep hearing. Except this time I didn't throw them away.

Thank you everyone for coming by and making a comment. I did check this morning  and the deer didn't coming to visit  last night, thank goodness.

    Hi, Ceil:

Can I add my order to Carl's list when he goes to the garden center?

I read somewhere that if your clay pot looks too new, you can cover it in yogurt and let it dry to "antique" it and make it look like stone. Do what you will with that tip.

    Cheers,

    Robin

Robin I have never heard that but may give it a try. It has to seep into the clay someway, if not it would run off or maybe the insects would get addicted to yogurt. I'll try something once, but will wait until I have some old yogurt that is on its last stage before I try.

    Howdy there Ceil and Carl

Ceil - Glad to hear the little Deer were good, and did not eat your mum plants. I like the three poted mums you put on your blog post.

Dale me too. I put the potted plants up on the porch and they just stand and look, poor little things want them so badly. Dale its Fri. morning here and my little fawns are standing out in the rain just looking at the back patio. I think they are waiting for me to bring them breakfast. The mom seldom comes around so they have adopted us. I tried to get them to go over and visit the neighbors but they won't leav the property.

Cindy I do that also and sometimes put some small rocks in the bottom of the pots to help with drainage. I'm not so sure they make clay pots like they use to, seems they break more easillly.

Ceil - I love plants.  And your step-by-step is welcome advice for recycling the pots.  And I'm thinking I'll have to try the yogurt idea - just because I want to see how that turns out.

Susan: I hit "hayday" this weekend. I went to a garage sale, folks were moving, they were selling all different size clay pots of ten cents each. This way I can buy plants with the savings. I'm also going to try Robin's yogurt recipe for recycling pots.
