For Sale By Owner - pros and cons

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with Keller Williams Realty Inc.

So you are thinking of selling your home but don't want to use a professional Real Estate Agent.

Many agents would not agree with me but it can be done. If you are lucky and the time is on your side it could possibly work. You just have to be aware of what you are getting yourself into before doing it. I have noticed that if your house is not sold in the first week or so it probably won't sell privately. I am not saying that it can work for everyone but some people do try and some are successful at it. This does not mean that you are instantly a Real Estate Agent. It means that you had the right buyer at the right place at the right time.

One of the things to consider is that when you are talking to a potential buyer on the phone, which you have never met, be careful what to tell them. If they are wanting to go see your home tomorrow at 2:00PM and you tell the potential client you and your wife are both at work and the kids are in school, you have just told a perfect stranger that your house is vacant and there is no one home. I don't think it's such a great idea to do so. You also have to make sure that the potential buyer is pre-approved, ready to buy and is serious. Otherwise everyone is wasting their time. Time is money and your time is valuable.

Hi Jean~ I actually agree with you.  I can't blame them for trying.  I used to sell my own all of the time!  Some sellers can and DO sell on their own.  They just need to be serious about selling and have the time involved to get it done!  They also need to know when to quit doing it alone and know when and who to turn it over to get it sold!

Thank you for the comment. It can be done but if it does not work, they need to know the value of a professional real estate agent.
