Some people are pioneers, some people are settlers. As you might expect, pioneers tend to be risk takers. They're the folks who pack up the wagons, load their reluctant families, and risk being shot with arrows in order to take advantage of unexplored opportunities on the "other side of the mountain." It takes guts to be a pioneer.
The settlers, on the other hand, well, they wait until all danger is clear and then forge ahead only to discover that the opportunties are unwanted leftovers. (Thanks a lot, pioneers.)
I was thinking about this idea of pioneers and settlers as it relates to the real estate business. I find it interesting that the pioneers of real estate get rich while the settlers are left with very little to speak of. In my observation of "real estate pioneers," I've noticed that the pioneers are usually up before dawn, scouting for opportunities ahead of them. They're also the ones who are in the real estate business as a full time occupation, in the midst of "bad" markets.
I think all of us can choose which kind of opportunist we want to be. If you are a settler, decide today to be a pioneer and throw caution to the wind. Take advantage of the unknowns in your life. Life rewards the risk takers, who in spite of the dangers ahead, move fearlessly into the unknown.
Are you going to be a real estate pioneer or just a settler? As for me, I'll take a chance at being shot by arrows.
