If you don't know it yet, California is broke, but perhaps not as broke as the City of Pontiac, Michigan.
Pontiac officials announced recently that the City will auction off the Pontiac Silverdome, host of the Super Bowl XVI in 1982, as well as host of several other enormous events, such as Pope John Paul II's visit to America, the 1994 World Cup, and 1987's Wrestlemania, which drew 90,000 people, the largest turnout for an indoor sporting event.
The Silverdome was built in 1975 at a cost of over $55 million and occupies 127 acres. Compare the cost to that of the new Cowboys Stadium at $1.2 billion, and the Silverdome seems like a bargain. Unfortunately, it hasn't been used regularly since the Detroit Lions left after the 2001 season.
The City states that flexible zoning laws have been established to make it an easier sale but that demolition is also a possibility depending on the new owner's needs. Seems to me that an indoor theme park and shopping center would be a possibility since they have something similar over there in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Anyway....
The auction will continue through November 12. To bid on it, visit the City of Pontiac's auction site. The auction is absolute; there is no reserve, so you could get a piece of sports history for little or nothing.
I've always dreamed of owning a significant piece of sports history, but the $1.5 million annual maintenance costs or the stadium, or the property taxes on 127 acres, might be too much even for me -- LOL.
