ActiveRain has optimized our blog post urls for SEO.

This applies to non AR blogs.

Before starting my blog on WordPress.org back in 2007 Maureen Francis told me to change my url structure for better SEO. There was a post about it on Dave in Tucson's Real Estate Blog Lab. My url was based on what he was recommending back then for WordPress.org blogs.

This MAY be something to think about carefully before changing though...

You will be changing the link structure on existing posts.  Breaking links?

Something to do before you start blogging.

This is a Re-Blog of Scott's post to the WordPress group.

Via Scott Sambucci (Altos Research):

A quick search engine optimization (SEO) tip to share today...

Check out this excellent blog post  by Greg Fleischaker in Louisville, KY - "Homes For Sale Louisville: Home Prices Drop Back Down To April Levels."  Here's why the post is really good:

  • It's succinct - very easy for the reader to grab and read the info that Greg is sharing
  • He's talking about relevant market information - answering the "How's the market?" question that EVERYONE has.
  • There's an image included - in this case, he's using an AltosChart to show the reader the trends that he's discussing.
  • Greg's included his own analysis to show his readers his local market expertise.

As I was reading Greg's blog, there was one place that I noticed he could improve - and it's not even in the blog post itself - it's in the URL of the blog post.

Here's the blog post URL:

http://www.louisvillekyrealestateblog.com/?p=526

The p=526 is the way that his blogging software indexes the article - it automatically assigns a number to the blog post.  However, one of Google's SEO variables is key words in the URL.   When Google sends out it's search engine crawlers to see what is on a web page (or a blog post in this case), one of the biggest variables is the URL. If the URL contains key words, that will dramatically help with page ranking in Google.

For example, from a recent post on the Altos Research blog:

http://blog.altosresearch.com/us-housing-reports-releases-september-2009/

Notice how the title of the post is in the URL?  This will help on Google when people search on Google for "US Housing Reports," Google sees that search term in the blog post URL and then says - "Here's a webpage that has what the searcher is looking for" and thus helps page ranking for individual posts.

Most blogging software programs such as WordPress should have a tool that allows you to change the "p=526" to match the title of your post.

That's my quick tip of the week.  (And don't worry - I asked Greg if it was okay to feature his blog in this post.  He does excellent work blogging and on Twitter!)

Maureen:  Thanks for some great tips.  I am guessing it would be a great thing if I would just make myself follow these simple rules.  I need to focus more.  Thanks a bunch !  Go Buckeyes !

I can't say Go Buckeyes this week.... I am a Badger...  3:30 Saturday the Buckeyes play my alma mater.

I read about this in the WordPress for Dummies Book too but had done my urls the way Dave in Tucson and MF told me to.

The thing I would caution is I believe if you change your URL structure you mess up your old links.  I remember this being something to do when you first start a WP blog.  It will be interesting if Greg's blog is a WP blog if this messes up old links.

Hi Maureen...You're gutsier than I am.  I'm afraid to do much of anything other than to post.  I guess I'm more like Karen.  Luckily there will be others that will benefit from your tip.

Great tip Maureen.  I learn something everytime I login to Active Rain.

Just as an FYI,

If you change the title of your post on ActiveRain (thereby changing the URL), the post still works for your old links. You will not get a bad link.

I never even thought about it breaking the link. I have so much confidence in AR blogs.

If I Recall Correctly, if you are using the stock URLs in WordPress, and link to those http://blogname.com/?p=123, and change to another type of link, like http://blogname.com/2009/10/15/name-of-my-post, the other link should work.  BUT, it doesn't if you go from the SEO friendly version back to the basic one...

Not 100% sure, but I believe that is the case...

Greg went from default (stock)  to custom and he has broken links in his sidebar.  It't not that old a blog, he just started it this year.

Maybe the broken links are from something else... just a coincidence.

I could be wrong...  I know that I changed some Joomla linking to SEO and didn't have a problem, and I did some WP blogs around the same time and hadn't had an issue there, either.

Okay, I'm still fairly new to blogging. This information on the url is really helpful. However, would someone like to be kind enough to tell me how, or direct me to where I can find out how, to change the url to begin with? Thank you!

Leah change what URL?  Are you talking about on an ActiveRain outside blog?  Or on a WordPress blog?  This post is about WordPress blogs and there is a link to the directions for that.

Thanks for stopping by.
