Support our Marines by knitting helmet liners. They are needed to provide additional warmth and with the winter months right around the corner now is the time to get started. The winters in Iraq and Afghanistan can be brutal and anything we can do to help alleviate the affects of the harsh conditions will be helpful.

Twice a month, on the first and third Saturday of the month, a "knit-in"is held at the National Museum of the Marine Corps' Leatherneck Gallery. The group meets from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

If you are not able to attend any of the Saturday sessions but still want to knit helmet liners for Marines, you may send your finished liners to:

National Museum of the Marine Corps

ATTN:  Ben Kristy

2014 Anderson Ave.

Quantico, VA 22134

You can find additional information and directions on how to make the liners at Support Marines.

For those wondering how they can show their appreciation for the men and women serving our country here is something you can do at home.  Folks of all ages can try their hands at this project.  Even older children may find that it is something they can handle.

You might even meet with others in your community to work on these together.

If you have ever thought, "What can I do?" here is one possibility.  There are others.  If you know of something perhaps you will share it with the rest of us.

These activities also warm the heart, supporting our servicemen & women in practical ways that make a day-to-day difference. Thank you for sharing this.

I tried knitting years ago.....my Mother could never teach me.  I crochet....wonder if they have a pattern for that?

Thanks Kate, what a great idea, as a military mother I am especially thankful for all the little extras that are done to remember all our military men and women.

What a cute idea, but what if I just buy some.....my kids love those things and I have croched a few but it takes me too long.    Wal mart has them on sale, knit hats, for one dollar sometimes.

I don't knit, I have wanted to learn but....

I will forward to some of my co-workers who have a group called Stitch and Bitch...

Great idea and a worthy cause.

Kate, I am so sorry I never learned the art of knitting from my grandmother whose hands were never still.  There IS a knitting store nearby and I will take this post to them...and possibly finally learn how.  Thank you for the information, I hadn't heard of this.

Hi Kay...I'm not sure if they have any patterns for crocheting but maybe you could try to learn how to knit know.  You might surprise yourself.

Hi Sheryl...We talk about supporting our troops.  This is one way to actually do it.  My husband served for 35 years and loved the military.  Hope your child does also.

Hi Joan...I hope you do!  This is a great reason to and you'll be accomplishing two things...learning something new and doing a good deed.

Hi Jane...According to the information at the site (link above) they have a specific style and instructions.  It must have something to do with fitting properly under the helmet.

Hi Carole...That would be great.  Knitting would be a nice hobby for you (although it's hard to find time for hobbies these days) and just possibly some others will see the notice at the shop and lend a hand.
