The announcement was made in Oslo, Norway, this morning.  President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

It is a particularly interesting result since the deadline for nominations was February 1 – less than two weeks into Mr Obama’s Presidency.

According to the AP, “The Norwegian Nobel Committee lauded the change in global mood wrought by Obama’s calls for peace and cooperation but recognized initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the US role in combating climate change.”  (full text of article <here>)

While I do not doubt Mr Obama’s sincerity or intentions in the peace department (which I did with Al Gore’s award from the Nobel committee several years ago), I can only say I would have thought the committee could have waited until further into his Presidency when he actually did something.

Apparently the Nobel Committee has read the same press clippings as the American voters and used the same criteria for selection: no experience, no accomplishments but great expectations.

Great expectations indeed.

I think the committee surprised us in 2007 as well.  do you remember who won that year?  the inventor of the internet  Al Gore!  But he didn't win for inventing the internet  :)

It appears that the requirements for winning this award were either written or based on the works of Charles Dickens........."Great Expectations"

Give him his due, I congratulate him on winning. Although I feel as you do but time will tell if folks think this way next year. He joins Carter and Gore and I think the Iranian leader.

I congratulate Mr. Obama for winning, BUT, he was awarded the prize more on the basis of HOPE FOR THE FUTURE than achievements of the past.  Its the Nobel Peace Prize not the Nobel INTENTIONS Prize people!!!!  As I read in an article this morning, past winners have risked LIFE, FREEDOM and their families to deliver world change.  They should have given Mr. Obama the opportunity to meet "his" goals that he has set for himself instead of diminishing past achievements of other winners by awarding someone who has been TALKING about doing things, and only been in office for 9 months.  For gods sake, he was nominated in JANUARY... HELLO!  He still has not done anything EXCEPT for apologize for us and make us appear weak.  Other countries LOVE THIS.  Whatever, as I say, expect less.

IMO awarding the Peace prize as John Mac states for "Great Expectations" seems to tarnish the accomplishments of former recipients who actually rolled their sleeves up and worked for peace.

LOL-The award goes to the guy who threw Poland, Czechoslovakia and Israel under the bus and who is being weak with Iran?

The Nobel Committee had the Audacity to Hope he will, some day, do something to warrant the award.

When I heard this this morning I thought I had tuned into the Onion. Even Liberals are having a little trouble getting their heads around this travesty. Next year he should certainly get an Oscar for his acting ability - because so far that's all it's been - an act. Al Nobel, founder of the award and inventor of dynamite, is not just turning over in his grave, he is spinning like a rotisserie on benzedrine.

The establishment of the Peace Prize

In his will, Alfred Nobel laid down that the whole of his remaining realizable estate - by the standards of the time the staggering amount of 31.5 million Swedish crowns (some 1.5 billion at today's rates) - should be invested in safe securities,

"the interest on which shall be annually distributed in the form of prizes to those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind".

With regard to the Peace Prize, the will stipulated that it was to be awarded to the person "who

shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or

reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

and oh by the way ..... The committee states.....In the process, a need sometimes arises to obtain additional information and updating, especially if any of the nominees are involved in current political affairs

WHAT ?    Obama was NOT JUST judged on 12 days?      Oh Phooey

Ted,

Oops, I never knew Nobel Prize can be given in advance.... Well, I guess neither did others. J-Mac came with funny suggestion about Great Expectations. This is also sounds like John Reed's "10 days that shook the World". Maybe not the World, but the Nobel Prize Committee. What the heck happened in those 10 days?

Obama's presidency was so over-hyped from the beginning and now this continues to over-hype him.  I hope that he can truly meet the giant expectations that have been made of him.

Ted, I must say that I was shocked as well.  I was not previously aware that the nominations were so short into his presidency.  Even more shocking!  Even the Democrats have said that they are surprised.  I guess we now have something bi-partisan!  :-)

I tend to agree with the commentators who feel that the award to the President is a subtle form of pressure intended to influence him into certain courses of actions in the future.  Will the award cause the President to hesitate in Iran or Afghanistan?  Was advance knowledge of the award a factor in the long delay in responding to the needs of the Afghanistan theater of conflict?

The most negative response to this turn of events was likely heard in the Bill Clinton residence. (while not a Clinton fan, he was probably more qualified for consideration for the award than the other three American Executives who have received the peace prize in the last seven years.)

Thanks to all for stopping by.

Welcome to Active Rain, Todd.

THis is a big disgrace for the Nobel Peace Prize and I will never look on it the same again, try International Elite copycat and encourage to be like me prize..What  a Joke!!

How heartbreaking that we can no longer covert the prize that was once so highly respected just landed in the trash can.. Pathetic...All talk and no actions deserves a prize,

Embarassing to the Nobel Peace Price tribe.

Before he was even sworn into office, Obama singularly changed the climate of civil discourse among nations around the world. In a word, hope was restored. But, Hey you know what? My beliefs are wrong.....you other guys have it all right. And I'm just so glad I stopped by so you all could straighten me out.

Thanks, Jennifer, for stopping by.  You should know me well enough to know that although I may disagree with you, it will be unusual for me to say that you are wrong.  Your opinion is welcome on my posts.  I will try to make an argument that is rational, based on facts as I see them, and not shrill.  I hope all those who comment here from either side of the question will do the same.

I agree with you that President Obama's outreach to the countries of the world has been laudable.  I do not feel that his apologies for his country have been appropriate.  Demeaning our country is not, in my view, a winning negotiation technique.  The premise that we were in tatters before the world until the arrival of Mr Obama is a fallacy, in my view.  We had excellent relations with most European and Asian countries at the end of the Bush administration - in the case of some, for the first time in decades.  Bush did more to combat HIV and other disease in Africa than any President in my memory. Bush was a friend to Israel and leading Arab countries.  Bush was, in part, the product of events in his time.  Mr Obama (or any new President) has the opportunity to begin with a fresh approach to all problems and partners but it is my view that Mr Obama's lack of real world experience has shown around the edges from time to time.

The actions of the Nobel committees have been criticized by many during recent years.  Members of the Norwegian committee have been quoted as saying that the selection of Mr Carter (2002) was intended to embarass President Bush.  The award to Mr Gore (2007) seemed to be taking sides in a scientific controversy that even scientists who shared the award with Mr Gore criticised.  The committees have broad latitude in their deliberations and their decision is beyond question.  But controversial awards diminish the prestige of the award in the eyes of the world.  Does this years award make it easier or harder for Mr Obama to continue his work? And is the award an effort to influence Mr Obama's policies and actions in the furture.

You and I have a right to our own opinions - but possibly not our own set of facts.  The facts here are that the Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2009 Peace Prize to President Obama.  I congratulate him and hope that the award raises our Country's prestige in those eyes of the world that do not consider us to be a peaceful force.  And it is also a fact that press and politician alike from all sides were caught by surprise by the award for this man at this time.
