USPS ClosingsThere was a time that if you had a job in the US Post Office it was safe for ever.  No one was ever downsized, and for the most part...Post Offices were only closed when a newer facility came online.  That will most likely change soon since the Post Office is struggling with tremendous 5 billion dollars in debt ( gee -  what a surprise for a Government run enterprise)! The USPS looks to pare its losses by closing many of its facilities.  In an Article written today in the Washington Post - named the facilities the Post Office is considering closing all in the states.  I am sure this will impact many communities across the nation.  Personally, I see this as a sad day for America!

List of Proposed Post Office Being Considered for Closure.

Personally I would love to see them all closed in L.A.  What a nightmare it is going into one of them. Unfortunately they closing the only one that was a pleasure to go into because it was always empty. Obviously, that's the reason. It was in one of the local malls.

Jim, great information. I don't see any of them in our area on the list.  Never thought I'd see the day when post offices closed.  Thanks for sharing!

Jim,

I don't know about your post office, but there is always a wait at my post office and only one person working the desk.  It is a poorly operated government entity that is getting left behind with the growth of technology.  Think about how many people are going to online billing or just sending an e-card via email.  Most online stores ship directly from there warehouses via UPS.  The post office has become functionally obselete and provides little value.  Just my thoughts.

Jim - Yet another example of poor management and bureaucratic bumbling.  I just posted about the problems and potential for a bailout at FHA.

I always know when he is off or on vacation..i agree with you look at all the jobs going to be lost.

It is sad to see any of them close. I hate to think about the people who will be losing their jobs hopefully they can be absorbed into other branches. Luckily, there are no offices in our area on the list.

Interesting Jim. I don't see any closing in my general area although there are a few right in the city.

Living right on the Canadian border, I know how much the Canadians in New Brunswick like our postal system. It's easy to slam the post office for whatever is not liked in the process of using them but we still have an incredible mail turn around and delivery system. Ask a Canadian what their system is like and why lots of companies there use the postal system on this side of the border. Faster. Period. Maybe cheaper? AR's with a red maple leaf jump in anytime here. Jim you have Nova Scotians..how do they rate their postal system? But that level of service is expensive and thus the curtailment and cut backs. Can you see living without the postal system for Saturday and Sunday..unless they are mailing vital organs thru the mail..couldn't the overnighters take up the slack? Just a suggestion to save jobs, improve efficiency/overhead. Only one Portland ME facility on the proposed target list..whew.

Job security went out the door a long time ago but seeing it hit the postal service reflects how much our culture has changed and is changing. Thanks for sharing the info, Jim.

I often wonder how something so simple can be made so complicated. We have one closing here and I was talking to a mailman the other day.

He said a lot of them are losing their homes because they were used to get 60 to 70 hours a week and now are at 45. He also said the reason many were getting those kind of hours was because the other were calling in sick. When you make $30 an hour and don't have a lot of expenses you can work three days a week and because of the union you cannot be fired.

The postal service is like any other government job, way over paid, never could get a real job type people. If the government was run like a business, half would be out of a job and the other half would take pay cuts and start working. This would include the Politicians, 72 cents of every dollar working folks earn go to paying these next to welfare recipients and it is time to stop it.

Thanks for the list.  I was concerned that the one in Lovettsville, population about 1000 would be on the hit list.  Of course, since they have almost completed a new post office building, I was almost sure it would be closed.

Whew!

Hi Jim, one in our area is closing Cumberland Mall, I personally use the UPS store quite often, it's about convenience and customer service. My experience with Post Offices are very, very long lines and no real focus on Customer Satisfaction, sad but true...

Lina Robertson, ozarks-realestate.com, Springfield MO Real Estate For Sale (RE/MAX Solutions)  Me too.  I never thought I would see the day.  However, it makes you wonder about all the other programs the government runs.  Many are in effective, they are used a s political tools, there is no accountability, and they always exceed budget!  So how about health care?

John Mulkey, Housing Guru (TheHousingGuru.com)  I think we need to bail out congress.  They are in over their heads.  Many of the elected officials in Congress have never held down a real job.  They do not know what a profit and loss statement is....

Hannah Williams (Re/Max affiliates NE)  It is kind of scary when you think about the government...they are constantly trying to invent machinery and systems that do not work.  For example...scanners that can read hand written addresses.  Now these are the same folks that are creating the new Air Traffic Control system that is not working very well!  Does anyone remember Y2K?  What the heck was up with that?  It was a bunch of total nonsense!  Healthcare anyone?

Andrew Mooers | Northern Maine Real Estate / Aroostook County Broker (MOOERS REALTY)  Personally, I like the Postal Service.  I cannot complain at all about how long it takes a letter to get there...  As far as the Canadians, we do a lot of mailing there and never have an issue.

Teral McDowell-Realtor GRI Dallas-Ft Worth (Century 21 Posey Properties)  I think it really tells us something...this economy is far worse off then they are letting on.  5 Billion in losses is not going to be fixed by closing even 1000 post offices.

Charles Stallions Real Estate 800-309-3414 Pensacola, Fl.    I disagree.  I worked for the government for a while and I think most government workers are underpaid and over worked.  Especiallyin the USPS.  Under Reagan we went almost 10 years with out an increase in pay.  The problem is not with the workers.  It is about the $600 toilet seats!  It is the 30 million dollars funding frisbee research.  It is a bout the highway to nowhere in West Virginia etc.  Pork, political favors has drained the til!

Lenn Harley, Homefinders.com, MD & VA Homes and Real Estate  Lenn it is my understanding the original list was at least 10 times this.  It was pared way back.  I do not know how much will be cut away down the road.  This number is not going to fix anything.

Alexander-Slocum REMAX Team - Vancouver WA Real Estate (RE/MAX equity group, inc. - Vancouver Washington)  It is interesting that originally several thousand closing were proposed. I am sure the politicians lined up and they pared it down to several hundred.  That was the good news the bad news is that a stamp will now be $100 bill glued to the upper right hand corner.

Jim - Thanks for sharing this article, I noticed that one closed near where I live and two other locations cut their hours!

Gina Tufano (RE/MAX Select Properties, Inc.)  This is only the beginning of this story.  It will take a lot of cuts and a load of rate hikes to make up a 5 billion dollar deficit.

The Post Office in Lovettsville is now closed from Noon to 1:30 p.m. daily.  Go figure.  They lost an overnight post from me last week to FedEx.

Closing for 1 1/2 hours in the middle of the day is hardly the way to run a business.

Lenn Harley, Homefinders.com, MD & VA Homes and Real Estate  The government unfortunatley is not run for profit.  Even Obama mentioned in his debate with a college student that free enterprise like UPS and FED/EX mop the street up compared to the USPS.

I get excited every time I am stuck in line at the post office sending out certified letters because I know it is just a matter of time until they close and either UPS, Fedex or Walmart take over : )     !    I use the one near LA Fitness near cumberland mall , and I laugh with every visit as they don't even have their hours of operation on the front door, just a note that they are closed on major holidays!!!! Got to love them unions!!!!
