I was honored to be the kick-off speaker at New Media Atlanta last month.

The topic I was given to speak about was, "Why Social Media Is Here To Stay." The reason is simple. Social Media is the love child of Social Networking and New Science. I actually wrote about this same topic here on ActiveRain in February of 2007, it just had a different title: "Why ActiveRain Is Working Even When It Fels Like It's Not." That post was about a book, Leadership And The New Science, complex adaptive systems, and the death of Newtonian business principles. My opinion has not changed.

Here's a video of the presentation. Thanks to Dakno.tv for capturing this session.

Jeff:

Well I only had a few minutes, with the wedding fast approaching, so will come back to finish, but this is great. It's interesting how many folks I have run into recently that say social media is just a fad. Needless to say they are the same folks who apparently aren't using it.

Jeff - You are the man !!!  I have learned a lot about social media just by reading your blog and listening to you at various settings.  One of the places I learned the most was at Inman NYC when you were a speaker there.  But the most rewarding was one of the earlier workshops there.  Last week we registered again for that conference in 2010 !

In any event, thank you for sharing this video.  I plan on listening to the whole video either later today or tomorrow.  I have a feeling it is going to be very informative !  ~ Chris

Jeff..What a wonderful "video"and thank you for posting it.I feel so fortunate to have met you in Philly at ReBarCamp....I love your analogy with the ants a colony building an empire. Social Media if used correctly can build an individual empire if we learn to adapt, learn, and change the way we think. You are so right who would have thought 10 years ago..we would be where we are now..I still have so much to learn..Thanks again

Excellent presentation Jeff. Love the idea of finding trends in the chaos. Makes sense. For the first time.

Just listened and watched the whole video !  Pretty amazing stuff.  I love the analogies to science, ants and complex adaptive systems !  I agree that one of the keys is listening and learning through all the chaos... great stuff.  I have a lot to learn : )

Jeff, Thanks for the presentation. The Twitter drone is non-stop and sometimes too much.

But my category of thought is also a small block - I appreciate your honest thoughts and words.

Listen. Is the key.

Jeff, now I have a much better understanding.  It wasn't so much the presentation as much as what the audience was doing that seemed to bring your points home. Very enjoyable.

I am taking the time to watch the video right now - sounds very interesting!  Thanks for sharing!

Cheers,

Woo hooooo! I was excited too when I got to see you in person again in ATL, just like Brad. If I had enough money, I'd be a 'Jeff Turner' groupie and follow you around in my Airstream.

Stumbled upon this on my Google Reader and horrified that I had missed it!  Once I got passed my fear of science, and allowed myself to actually understand what you were saying re: complex adaptive systems...and then threw the phrase around my husband a bit and watched him get all googley-eyed (ah-hah, see, honey, I can be smart, too, sumthymes!!)

...I loved the presentation and got a huge amount out of it.  Jeff, this is the first time that I have totally understood, down to the core of my being, exactly how and why social media is fundamentally a listening tool...FIRST.  Engagement second, but listening first.

Marvellous.  Thanks so much.  Wonderment, as always.  J

I always enjoy your candidness!  I no, I didn't think it "sucked"... had to laugh at that!

Jeff, that was an excellent presentation! I'm so glad I took the time to listen... and great way to use the "noise" as a tool to make your point about adaptability! Very nice.

Hey Jeff, I have to tell you I truly appreciate your post and your intuitive view on Social Media.  I first watched this on Friday and found myself quoting you at our sales meeting earlier today.  I'm looking forward to hearing you when you come to Virginia Beach. Tina and Justin have already began the Social Media Blitz for it and I'm hoping to have a 'breakout' session that will compliment your presentation.

You suck, I have never heard so much bs in all my life, I cannot believe you get paid to do that.....

just kidding, it was awesome, I loved every word.  I agree with you completely. You said things that have been floating around in my head but you put them all together.  Great speech. Nancy
